Scientific Category 3. Proposal For 4. Proposal Type 5. Continuation ID STELLAR ASTROPHYSICS GO 1 Long Term yrs Sub Category STELLAR ATMOSPHERES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Douglas K Duncan SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INST USA 301-338-4935 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract Observations of Boron, an easily destroyed element, will be used to probe processes which circulate or remove and destroy material in cool stars. These include mass loss, diffusion, meridional circulation, convective overshoot, and turbulence and rotationially-driven mixing. 1. The destruction of light elements in the sun is not understood but is a key to understanding internal mixing in cool stars. Alpha Centauri A and B will be measured to study mixing in stars respectively slightly more and less massive than the sun. Beta Hyi will be studied as an example of a 1.0 solar mass, partially evolved star. 2. The rates of mixing processes, especialy those which are expected to operate only on long timescales, will be studied by observing two stars in the intermediate age cluster NGC 752. One star will be from inside the "Lithium Gap" region in the F stars, and one star from outside the gap. 3. Two red giants and subgiants will be observed to help measure the amount of mass lost on the giant branch. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . NOTE: THIS PROPOSAL ONLY USES SIDE 2 OF THE GHRS. We are aware of the GHRS condition (as the P.I. is GHRS Instrument Scientist.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 3614c PI: Douglas K Duncan Proposal Title: BORON AS A PROBE OF STELLAR STRUCTURE AND MASS LOSS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pi Douglas K Duncan SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE USA INSTITUTE Marc H. Pinsonneault YALE UNIV. USA Constantine P. Deliyannis YALE UNIV./UNIV. OF HAWAII USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Each of these observations is a simple GHRS ACCUM mode observation. Nothing unusual at all. All ONBOARD ACQs; all are single stars. Almost all of the targets are BRIGHT, and RETURN TO BRIGHTEST POINT IS ESSENTIAL for the target acquisition to work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Boron 2500A cannot be observed from the ground. Can't get nearly enough S/N with IUE. Be 3130 can be marginally observed from the ground, but high accuracy is extremely difficult on faint objects. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Not Needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Not needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Duncan has extensive STSDAS/IRAF experience, and the ability to reduce GHRS data. He has done spectrum synthesis work, using the latest synthesis program and atmospheres of Kurucz (1990, private comm.), This work takes time; thus the budget request for 18 months support. The paper on Boron in Three Halo stars just sent to Ap. J (Duncan, Lambert, and Lemke) shows a very successful analysis of exactly the kind required here. The stellar structure models are an additional phase beyond data reduction per se. These have been done successfully in the past by the Co-I's at Yale. There is some computer support money in the budget for this. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. None. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. Prop. 2634. Duncan, P.I. "Boron and Be as probes of Cosmic Ray Spallation." Three spectra obtained, fully reduced, compared to synthetic spectra. Paper written; will be submitted to Ap. J. shortly. Co- authors David Lambert and Michael Lemke. A second paper should follow additional observations. Prop. 2619. "Precision Parallaxes of Cepheids... with WF/PC." No data yet. Unrelated science. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
