CNO isotope ratios line_3: (eg 12C/13C, 15N/14N and 16O/18O) have given many extra constraints on all line_4: the mixing processes occurring between the main sequence and PN ejection. line_5: In general, observations show more mixing occurs than is predicted. line_6: The CNO abundances for Galactic and Magellanic Cloud PNs show that the line_7: `3rd dredge-up' of 12C is more efficient in metal-poor environments. However, line_8: until now it has not been possible to measure important diagnostics such as line_9: the 12C/13C ratio in nebulae so as to relate red giant & PN populations. line_10: We propose to use the GHRS, Echelle and Large Science Aperture to measure line_11: C12/13 ratios in 3 PNs with a novel spectroscopic method. As 12C has zero line_12: nuclear spin, the normal C III 1S(J=F=0) - 3P(J=F=0,1,2) transition has only line_13: two components (1906.7, 1908.7A). But the nuclear spin (I=1/2) of 13C gives line_14: a finite line strength to an F=1/2-1/2 transition at 1909.6A, which is line_15: absent in 12C. Measurement of all three lines will provide the C12/13 ratio. line_16: In an allocation of under 9 hours we can reach 3-4 sigma limits for a C-rich line_17: Galactic nebula, a C-rich SMC nebula, and a Type I (He and N-rich, and having line_18: C 3. The GHRS's detector has a very much better line_16: dynamic range and the spectrograph gives the very high resolution we need. line_17: This project cannot be done with the IUE; it needs the GHRS. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: It is proposed to adopt the standard pipeline calibration. We choose not to line_2: sample the inter-order background since there are no known emission lines line_3: nearby in the adjacent orders at 1846 or 1974A in PN. The electron density line_4: will be measured from the ratio of the C III] 1906.7 to 1908.7A lines using line_5: total line fluxes as well as line fits. We will attempt to fit the 1908.7A line_6: profile to that of 1909.6A (since they should be of the same shape) in line_7: order to determine the 1909.6A line flux. In addition we have interactive line_8: Gaussian line fitting programs which can handle constraints on line line_9: wavelength as well as statistical errors. In the event of non-detection of line_10: the 13C line, we expect to be able to specify useful upper limits based on line_11: our extensive spectroscopic experience. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: The coordinates given are from measurements on GASP frames. For NGC3918 we line_2: have eyeballed the centre of the nebula ( diameter ~ 15arcsec ) and for the line_3: two Magellanic Cloud nebulae have fitted a 2-D Gaussian. The coordinates line_4: agree very well with those determined from our own measurements of plates. line_5: All three objects - NGC3918, SMC-N2 and LMC-N122 - are bright in the UV line_6: ( mostly from the many emission lines ) and so spiral search will work line_7: well. For the Magellanic Cloud nebulae we have specified a LOCATE = line_8: YES since we need to centre the nebulae in the large aperture. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: Sufficient computing resources are already available to all three line_2: investigators. Travel funds for final analysis and preparation of results line_3: for publication are also readily available. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: CLEGG fname: ROBIN mi: ES category: PI inst: ROYAL GREENWICH OBSERVATORY addr_1: MADINGLEY ROAD city: CAMBRIDGE CB3 0EZ country: ENGLAND phone: +44 223 374700 telex: 817235 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: NGC3918 name_2: PK294+4D1 descr_1: G,502 pos_1: PLATE-ID=06PS, pos_2: RA = 11H 50M 17.88S +/- 1.5", pos_3: DEC = -57D 10' 56.6" +/- 1.5" equinox: J2000 rv_or_z: V = -20 acqpr_1: EXT comment_1: POSITION REFERS TO THE CENTROID OF comment_2: THE NEBULA AS MEASURED ON GASP comment_3: FRAME. comment_4: FLUX 1 IS SUM OF 1907+1909A comment_5: LINES.
