Theoretical models of the line_3: formation of planetary nebulae have indicated that observable changes can take line_4: place on timescales as short as decades, i.e., the lifetime of HST. Such line_5: predictions have since been confirmed by observations. So it is now known line_6: that the evolution of many PPNe can be studied if snapshots of them are taken line_7: in the near future and again five or ten years later. The evolution which will line_8: be detected by the proposed (and future) snapshots results from various line_9: processes depending on the phase in which the target is currently viewed -- old line_10: asymptotic giant branch stars, OH/IR stars, or more advanced PPNe. Even before line_11: a future generation of snapshots is acquired, important information in the line_12: short term will result from these snapshots. The deconvolved images obtained line_13: from this initial program will immediately distinguish among differing models line_14: of planetary nebula formation. For example, some PPNe will show evidence of line_15: ionization fronts or shocks. While many phases of stellar evolution do not line_16: lend themselves to this sort of scrutiny, PPNe present observable changes on a line_17: short enough timescale that it is highly desirable to take snapshots of as many line_18: of them as possible and establish a baseline from which the evolution of these line_19: objects can be analyzed. (In the case of the optically faintest line_9: targets, the 6563 H-alpha filter -- F656N -- will be used instead of H-beta.) line_10: Exposure times have been estimated for the UV-flooded condition and the PC will line_11: be pre-flashed. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: The transition from red giants to planetary nebulae is an area of research for line_2: which an HST snapshot survey can provide important new information by revealing line_3: various stages of the mass loss process that leads to the formation of a line_4: planetary nebula (PN). A snapshot survey provides the needed variety of line_5: targets while simultaneously providing observational capabilities not available line_6: with ground-based or other space-based observatories: PNs eventually expand, line_7: but start out as compact proto-planetary nebulae. Indeed, about half of all line_8: known PNs have not yet been resolved. The small angular size results in the line_9: need for the high spatial resolution available in deconvolved Planetary Camera line_10: images. At the same time, the small size of these objects makes the deconvolu- line_11: tion more feasible than it would be with older, more extended PNs. line_12: Ground-based aperture synthesis radio observations provide comparable spatial line_13: resolution, but do not provide the desired information inasmuch as the emission line_14: lines of interest are not in the radio domain. For instance, optical emission line_15: lines from H I and O III have revealed intensity changes on timescales of less line_16: than a decade. Furthermore, some protoplanetary nebulae have little or no line_17: radio emission (e.g., M2-56 for which Aaquist and Kwok [1990] report an upper line_18: limit of 0.3 mJy at 5 GHz). Based on VLA observations of those compact PNs line_19: which CAN be observed in the radio, it is known that deconvolved HST images line_20: will resolve many protoplanetary nebulae which are not optically resolved from line_21: the ground. The need for high resolution narrow-band optical images makes HST line_22: the observatory of choice and the variety of targets needed for this project line_23: makes the observations ideally suited to a snapshot survey. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: No real-time or time-critical observations.
