Abstract We propose using the GHRS and ECH-B grating to observe bright (< 12.5 mag) supernovae which explode in external galaxies. The supernovae will serve as probes of the interstellar gas in the disk and halo, enabling us to search for Mg II and Mg I absorption lines arising from the host galaxy. The 6 km/s resolution of the echelle will allow us to resolve individual components which comprise the line. The accurate measurments of column densities & doppler parameters of each component and the large-scale multicomponent velocity structure of the lines will allow an unprecedented analysis of the chemical, ionization and kinematic conditions within the absorbing gas. For galaxies with low recession velocities, similar information may be obtained for local Milky Way absorption lines observed simultaneously. Because the galaxy which hosts the supernova will be obvious, the detected absorption can be compared with lines seen at higher redshifts in QSO spectra, providing an example of absorption from a KNOWN environment. A collation of all supernovae discovered over the last 10 years shows that roughly one supernova will be found during Cycle 2 with a magnitude brighter than our limit. We therefore request Target of Opportunity time to observe one supernova. Scientific Justification. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Discoveries of bright supernovae are announced via {\it IAU Telegrams}. We would activate our Target of Opportunity time based on the visual magnitude of the object ($<\:12.5$) and the redshift of the host galaxy, which must lie between $100-700$~\Ks\ or $>\: 850$~\Ks\ to ensure that there is no blending with local Milky Way gas. The flux from {\it IUE} data should be obtainable to ensure an adequate count rate with {\it HST}. We would observe the supernova for 5.2 hours at the redshift of Mg~II and 5.2 hours at Mg~I. In the unlikely event of finding a supernova with a magnitude brighter than 10.5, we would spend 7 hours using the 160M grating to search for C~IV, and divide the remaining 3.4 hours between Mg~II and Mg~I, since the opportunity to identify C~IV in a galactic halo would be too important to miss. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Mg~II lines can only be observed for $z\:\apg\:0.2$ in the optical. These are therefore only accessible at lower redshifts with the {\it International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE)}. {\it IUE} has a small aperture which permits detection of only strong ($1-2$~\AA ) lines in the brightest quasar spectra and is unsuitable for resolving the lines within a complex. {\it IUE} has only twice successfully identified UV absorption in the interstellar medium of an external galaxy. The spectrum of SN~1987a provided information on the strengths of many absorption lines (Blades~\etal\ 1988) from both the host galaxy (the LMC) and the Milky Way due to its brightness. Even with the exceptional signal-to-noise, however, the limited resolution of the telescope could not resolve the complex multi-component structure of the lines and only a simple analysis of the conditions within the gas was possible. The same problem beset the analysis of SN~1980k in NGC~6946 (Pettini~\etal\ 1982); in this case, the redshift of the galaxy was too low to distinguish absorption by the interstellar gas of NGC~6946 from local Milky Way gas. The {\it GHRS} plus {\it HST} is ideal for this study. The sensitivity of the instrument is high enough to detect weak Mg~II and Mg~I lines in bright supernovae, and, with the echelle, data can be obtained at a resolution which not only shows the large-scale velocity structure of the absorption-line profiles but should resolve all the components. This in turn permits a more accurate determination of column densities and doppler parameters, and leads to a more detailed analysis of the chemical, ionization and kinematics of the absorbing gas. For these two reasons, the {\it GHRS} is more suitable for studying the physics of galactic haloes than the {\it FOS}.\\ Our ground-based investigation into the interstellar medium of galaxies using supernovae as probes is still in progress. We have so far obtained high signal- to-noise, high-resolution observations of 8 supernovae in external galaxies, detecting absorption in Ca~II and/or Na~I in all but one of them. We would obtain data on Ca~II and Na~I in the supernova observed with {\it HST} to complement the UV data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The UV flux of supernovae fall off rapidly after the initial maximum. We thus wish to apply the minimum notification (two days) before the first observations are taken. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. We will use profile fitting routines to model the components within the absorption line and to establish the velocity of individual components to within a few tenths of a \Ks . We therefore require a wavelength accuracy better than the $\pm1$ diode (half a resolution element) normally available, and will need spectral calibration lamps taken before and after exposures, as suggested in the {\it GHRS} manual. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. All the data should be reducible using standard IRAF and STSDAS reduction packages. For absorption lines in which we resolve components, we have profile fitting routines available for subjective fits to the data, plus automatic routines which produce a best fit based on minimizing chi-squared. One of us (DVB) will work full time on the data reduction and analysis. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. As discussed in Section 1, over the last 10 years the frequency of supernovae brighter than 12.5 has been approximately one per year (Fig. 3). We therefore expect one possible candidate during Cycle~2. For supernovae with a magnitude $\geq\:12.0$ the frequency drops to approximately 1 every two years.
