Abstract Ly-alpha emission is potentially the best tracer of star formation at high redshift. At z > 1.7, Ly-alpha emission has been detected in powerful radio galaxies and recently in a few proto-galactic disks which give rise to damped Ly-alpha absorption in the spectra of background quasars. At low redshift, it has been detected in some starburst galaxies. However, not all the nearby starburst galaxies show Ly-alpha emission which may be due to either absorption by dust grains and/or the presence of an underlying B star population. At intermediate redshifts (z=0.5), objects giving rise to MgII absorption systems in quasar spectra have been identified with field galaxies of very extended gaseous envelopes. These galaxies show signs of stellar formation activity, revealed by their blue continuum and OII 3727 emission and which should also be traced by their Ly-alpha emission. We propose to observe the Ly-alpha emission of a few of these absorbing starburst galaxies with fairly strong OII 3727 (and H-beta) emission. This will help to ascertain their activity, to provide a link between the z=0.5 MgII absorbers and the z=2 proto-galactic disks, and to clarify the interpretation of Ly-alpha emission in high redshift galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. The observations will be obtained with the FOS, using the G190H grating and the red digicon except for the lowest redshift object 1127-145 (Ly-alpha is shifted only to 1596 A and the blue digicon should be better). The large entrance aperture 4.3"*4.3" (which is effectively 4.3"*1.4" given the heights of the diodes) will be used. The CIV lines will also be in the spectral range of the G190H grating giving, if detected, an indication on the excitation level in the objects. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. We aim at observing the Lyman-alpha emission (1216 A) from galaxies at moderate redshifts (0.3-0.5); the HST is the only facility providing access to the corresponding UV wavelength range with enough sensitivity. Because we plan to observe with the largest entrance aperture of the FOS, the program is not too much affected by the spherical aberration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. From ground-based study we know that one of the target, the galaxy close to the line of sight to QSO 1127-145, is elongated. In order to maximize the flux received and to improve the accuracy of the comparison with the ground-based data, we ask to approximately align the X axis of the blue digicon with the major axis of this galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction and analysis will be based on the regular FOS data products and performed at the proposer institutes. The amount of expected data will be small and the main concern will be to get the most appropriate dark current files from the STScI User Support Branch. The data analysis and reduction will be done on a VAX station with either the IRAF and/or MIDAS softwares (LAS) and a SUN station with MIDAS (IAP). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9.
