Abstract The goals of this jitter OLT are to assess the pointing performance of HST using data from a science instrument, to identify modes of oscillation and compare them with structural models, and to verify that normal operations procedures with respect to mechanism motions during science observations are acceptable. This test will provide data at high frequencies which is unattainable with analysis of FGS data. The data in the 20-75Hz range will provide valuable information to the CO-STAR designers. THIS TEST REQUIRES SPECIAL COMMANDING and MANUAL TRANSFORMATION. REAL- TIME DOWNLINKS ARE NECESSARY FOR FOR TARGET ACQUISITION, FOR HIGH RATE HSP DATA, and FOR CONTROL OF TAPE RECORDER MECHANISM MOTIONS. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF EXPOSURE LINE COMMENTS. Validation unable to handle parallel reqs correctly: Please contact Lupie, Balzano, McCollough, Younger. with questions. The test is designed to measure high frequency vibrations with amplitudes as small as 4 milli-arcsec. A star will be placed on an HSP aperture edge and the flux will be monitored at a rate of 1000 HZ. Given an understanding of the PSF, which will be measured in this test, changes in the flux of the star on the edge may be interpreted as jitter. The jitter measurements will be repeated at each of two orthogonal edges of the aperture. In addition, a shorter measurement will be made with the star within the aperture to verify an understanding of the noise characteristics of the HSP. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. POINTING REQIREMENTS: For all stellar observations the FGS Guidance must be FINE -LOCK. The pointing accuracies required are: 1) to position the read-beam on the edge of a 10 arcsec aperture to within 0.2 arcsec, and (2) position a star on the edge of the aperture to an accuracy of 20 mas. These stringent pointing requirements justify the need for REAL-TIME verification observations. After 'finding' the aperture edge, the star will be positioned on that edge and high speed data collection for a visibility period will ensue. The edge finding and jitter exposure will be performed twice on each of two orthogonal axes of the aperture, and in the middle of the aperture (as a control). EARTH-CALIB DETECTOR CALIBRATION: Two high resolution HSP maps of a flat field source, centered on the target edges, will provide a check of the detector coordinates of those edges, i.e., where the read beam should be placed. Since there is no evidence for thermal or predictable temporal effects, these maps will be taken near the time of the Jitter observations for off-line verification and analysis. Accuracies - edges determined to 0.15 arcsec. FIND V3 EDGE IN V2V3 COORDINATES: Perform standard Mode I TA. To verify, acquire an image centered at the edge with higher resolution than Mode I. Real-time contact requested to adjust pointing if necessary. *NOTE OSS - non-standard pointing adjustment - see GF section 7. JITTER at V3 EDGE Jitter on V3 Axis - execute a 30 minute high speed exposure with parallel mechanism motions (Special Commands). The mechanism motions require special commanding: o wait for 300 seconds-quiescent jitter. o Perform following mechanism motions: - Command Science tape recorder forward for 20S - WAIT 17S - Command Science tape recorder forward for 10S - WAIT 17S - Command Science tape recorder forward for 20S - Initiate special commanding to reconfigure the HRS - 112S - Perform HRS carrousel sequence: - Safe to G160M wavelength 2000 (34816 to 49376). Wait 30 seconds - Emulate HRS WAVESCAN: Command carrousel to 49316 Wait 7 sec Command carrousel to 49256 Wait 7 sec Command carrousel to 49196 Wait 7 sec Command carrousel to 49136 Wait 7 sec - Emulate HRS FPSPLIT: Move carrousel to 49135 Wait 7 sec - Repeat HRS FPSPLIT 4 times, decreasing carrousel position by 1. - Rotate carrousel to SAFE 34816. Wait 30 seconds. - Repeat WAVESCAN series and FPSPLIT series ONE MORE TIME for a total of TWO times. - Bring the HRS to HOLD to insure carrousel motor *off*. - Acquire at least 45S of quiescent data after HRS-to-HOLD. - Perform parallel FGS astrometry (targets are not real): - Move FGS servos: FGS POS Mode on two targets - F605W. - Move FGS Filter: FGS Pos Mode on one target - F550W. - Move FGS Filter: FGS Pos Mode on one target - F605W. (End of Mechanism Motion Series) REPEAT RT EDGE-VERIFICATION IMAGE. REPEAT JITTER MEASUREMENT ON V3 EDGE WITH MECHANISM MOTIONS. CONTINUOUS SCAN ACROSS EDGE: continuous scan across V3 edge - offline analysis of the PSF. JITTER CONTROL MEASUREMENT Take data with star in aperture center to serve as a control to assess HSP noise response. Perform Mechanism motions in parallel: - wait about 60 seconds-quiescent jitter - Command Science tape recorder forward for 20S - Initiate special commanding to reconfigure the HRS - 112S - Rotate HRS carrousel from Safe to 49376. - Wait about 30 sec - Bring the HRS to HOLD to ensure carrousel motor off. - Move FGS servos: FGS POS Mode on one target - F605W. - Move FGS Filter: FGS Pos Mode on one target - F550W. FIND V2 EDGE IN V2V3 COORDINATES: Perform standard Mode I TA. To verify, acquire an image centered at the edge with higher resolution than Mode I. Real-time contact requested to adjust pointing if necessary. *NOTE OSS - non-standard pointing adjustment - see section 7. JITTER ON V2 EDGE Jitter on V2 Axis - acquire 30 minute HSP Jitter. HSP exposure with parallel mechanism motions. Mechanism motions are IDENTICAL to those used at V3 edge. REPEAT EDGE-VERIFICATION MAP. REPEAT JITTER on V2 EDGE. CONTINUOUS SCAN ACROSS EDGE: Perform continuous scan across V2 edge for off-line modelling of the PSF. ASSUMPTIONS: - Banana effect not as predicted; however deflection instabilities are prevalent with amplitudes up to 0.25 arcsec. This is deemed to be acceptable, thereby eliminating the need for REAL-TIME alteration of the READ-BEAM location and thus reducing some of the risks. - Confirmation images have been included in order to verify target positioning -- needed for data interpretation. - Selected brighter target (spherical aberration). - Real-Time Edge location in V2V3 coordinates has been eliminated. Results from HSP calibrations seem to imply high accuracy relative locations (20-30mas). In addition, the real-time algorithm to uplink the time after a spatial scan is not available, thus making any specialized real-time calculations extremely difficult and risky. Page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Submitted as an Observatory Level Test to to assess the pointing stability during standard operational activities; To provide information on the excitation frequencies for the COSTAR design. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. EXPOSURE TIME JUSTIFICATION: Because of the 1 millisecond sampling time and the goal of determining the power spectrum at frequencies between 40 and 250HZ and excursions of 0.0005 mas, the S/N can be improved by taking a large number of samples and doing a straightforward Fourier Analysis. The duration is also extended by the S/N requirements during mechanism motions and commanding overheads. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. *** SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS *** 1) The exposure duration of the actual HSP jitter exposures should be lengthened or shortened based on special commanding overheads. 2) The initial 500-600 seconds of the jitter exposure requires that no 'controllable' mechanisms be operated. 3) The stellar target portions of the test are SEQ NO GAP in order to minimize the number of Mode I TAs and to ensure stability of the aperture/detector coordinate systems. 4) Several REAL-TIME contacts are required for pointing intervention, high speed data transmision, and active control of the science tape recorder. 5) The Earth Calib observations should be obtained as a SEQ NO GAP connection with the Jitter Series. 6) PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF EXPOSURE LINE COMMENTS. Validation could not automatically handle some of the parallel requirements (e.g., GROUP-FGS in parallel, SEQ NON-INT in parallel, etc). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. OSS: REAL-TIME DATA REDUCTION - EARTH-CALIB data will be acquired and analyzed in in advance - NO OSS support will be necessary. - MODE I - The initial Mode I acquisition will be a standard INT ACQ into the HSP UV2 target acquisition aperture. - NON-STANDARD RT ADJUSTMENT - a map centered on the aperture edge and with higher pixel resolution will be obtained to verify and adjust star on edge. Standard OSS transformation coefficienct will yield incorrect results. Will have to manually calculate any small angle adjustment. Algorithms to be supplied in collaboration with O. Lupie. - CONINTINUOUS SCANS - Offline analysis only (NO OSS support). - JITTER MEASUREMENTS: Although the HSP Jitter data is coming down in REAL-TIME, there are NO requirements on OSS. The real-time requirements are based on data volume and TR control. Plans for Off-line Data Reduction - The FGS telemetry will be acquired through OMS and processed through OMS and personal software algorithms. In addition, some of the telemetry will be sent through the PASS alignment software. - The HSP jitter series will be Fourier analyzed using IDL available at the STScI. - The Engineering Telemetry from the SIs will be analyzed via OMS to determine the exact timing of the of the mechanism motions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
