Abstract Knowledge of the point-spread-function (PSF) for large (LSA) aperture GHRS is essential for any quantitative analysis of spectra taken through the LSA. With the determination that the GHRS has better far UV response than the FOS, coupled with simulations showing that the LSA is superior to the SSA for detection of weak, unresolved features, the need for good PSFs has increased in importance. This is independent of any deconvolution issues. Deconvolution, which may in some cases be a useful procedure to apply to LSA spectra, also requires knowledge of the PSF. Good SSA PSFs can be derived using calibration lamp spectra and simple modelling. Unfortunately, GHRS LSA maps have not proven sufficient to derive point-spread- functions (only N1 picks off the full beam). The SAO observations of CHI LUPI were justified as a test of GHRS resolving power, LSA degradation and deconvolution testing. Analysis of this data, coupled with many simulations, has shown that the best approach to deriving the relative PSF difference between the LSA and SSA is by direct least-squares solution for the PSF relating spectra acquired through the two apertures. With a vsini < 1.2 km/sec, CHI LUPI is an ideal target to define PSFs over the full range of spectral elements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of special scheduling requirements. Exposure times are selected to yield S/N about 100 for LSA, and 70, or greater, for SSA. These are levels required for adequate extraction of the relative PSF relating the two apertures. To achieve the best SSA throughput for these observations, they should be scheduled at least 6 weeks after completion CAL/HRS 3999. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data will be analysed at the ST ScI using fully developed and tested software. (See abstract for brief discussion.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. High signal-to-noise spectra will be obtained through both GHRS apertures at three basic wavelengths chosen to: 1) well span the full UV wavelength range accessible to the GHRS, and 2) provide scientifically valuable spectra. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
