The spatial resolution and the spectral range line_4: of the Hubble Space Telescope, combined with the ability to continue line_5: similar observations for at least 17 years, assure that this data line_6: will contribute to a valuable database for interpreting the high line_7: resolution data from Voyager, Galileo and Cassini. The basic problems line_8: that are addressed with these data are: temporal variations of the line_9: ammonia clouds, characterization of convection in the upper line_10: tropospheres, meridional stratospheric circulation, variation in the line_11: troposphere-stratosphere dynamic coupling and seasonal variability. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: ATREYA fname: SUSHIL title: DR. inst: MICHIGAN, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: BEEBE fname: RETA title: P.I. inst: NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY country: USA ! lname: BELTON fname: MICHAEL title: DR. inst: NATIONAL OPTICAL ASTR OBS country: USA ! lname: DANIELSON fname: G. title: MR. mi: E. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! lname: GIERASCH fname: PETER title: DR. inst: CORNELL UNIVERSITY country: USA ! lname: INGERSOLL fname: ANDREW title: DR. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! lname: LAMAYE fname: SANJAY title: DR. inst: WISCONSIN, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: OWEN fname: TOBIAS title: DR. inst: HAWAII, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: ROSSOW fname: WILLIAM title: DR. inst: NASA, GODDARD country: USA ! lname: TRAFTON fname: LAURENCE title: DR. inst: TEXAS, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: WEST fname: ROBERT title: DR. mi: A. inst: JET PROPULSION LABORATORY country: USA ! lname: ENCRENAZ fname: THERESE title: DR. inst: PARIS OBSERVATORY country: FRANCE esa: X ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: This investigation is based on the acquisition of an integrated set of line_2: observations that utilize the Planetary Camera and the Faint Object line_3: Spectrograph to accumulate a data set that will provide near simultaneous line_4: multi-color imaging and UV spectra of selected regions. The more line_5: contiguous the data, the higher will be the scientific yield. Our line_6: approach is to identify specific observing sequences and to systematically line_7: apply them during selected intervals of time. Features, including the Red line_8: Spot, and active equatorial plume, a brown barge and a White Oval, will be line_9: observed as well. The northern hemisphere of Saturn will be mapped in the line_10: second cycle and the southern hemisphere in the third cycle. We have sub- line_11: mitted a detailed schedule for the first cycle only. We plan to use a line_12: highly similar approach for th following two cycles. Because of our desire line_13: for contiguous data, we have assigned priorities to specific sets of line_14: observations and would to prefer to omit certain data when it interferes line_15: with acquisition of guide stars, etc. rather than to suffer larger temporal line_16: gaps in the data. line_18: Our planned observations are as follows: line_20: Jupiter-- Multi-color imaging with the Planetary Camera that will span orbits line_21: 1-6 (0 to 7.9 hours) and orbits 14 to 19 (19.0 to 26.9), respectively, will line_22: yield two multi-color maps of the planet. The two sequences will look at the line_23: center of the planet and the longitude of the central meridian will be 0, 57, ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: 115, 172, 230 and 286 degrees for sequence 1 and 25, 82, 140, 197, 255 and 312 line_2: deg for seq 2, relative to the initial starting position. Sequence 1 Filters line_3: are F718M, F889N, F413M, F336W and F230W and sequence 2 filters are F413M, line_4: F718M, F631N, F336W and F284W. The indicated order of the filters minimizes line_5: the difference in viewing angle for F718M and F889N (optimizing a color-ratio line_6: map) in the first sequence and assures that we obtain the F413M pair for line_7: measuring wind field in two colors with the least smeared images. The F336W line_8: pair will be lower spatial resolution; however, they will provide information line_9: on vertical wind shear. The F631N filter places additional constraints on line_10: the spectral dependence on limb-darkening. We have considered the possible line_11: loss of the last image in some of the sequences and assumed that we could read line_12: out the last image during earth occultation. This 20.6 hour time difference line_13: between the two imaging sets corresponds to a minimum detectable velocity of line_14: 2 m/sec. During orbits preceding and between this line_15: mapping sequence spectra will be obtained of the line_16: same atmospheric region with different gratings of the Faint Object Spectro- line_17: graph: Three observing sequences have been formulated to obtain spectra line_18: ranging in wavelength from 1600 to 3300A. Using the FOS/RD and the FOS/BL line_19: configuration with gratings G190H and G270H, signal to noise ranging from 10 to line_20: 50 can be obtained for the wavelength interval from 1700 to 3300A. In order to line_21: obtain observations at selected latitudes, as well as observations of specific line_22: features, we are proposing that sequences be repeated in a systematic manner. line_23: This will allow us to characterize the Rayleigh H2 and particulate scattering, ! question: 3 section: 3 line_1: obtain visible, near IR and UV imaging, and obtain spectra of NH3, PH3, C2H2, line_2: and H2S at selected latitudes (a preliminary choice is 65, 48, 25, 20, 15, 6, line_3: and -20 degrees planetographic latitude for cycles 1 and 3, with a similar line_4: selection mapping the southern hemisphere in cycle 2). This approach to line_5: observing the planet defines the scope of data that can be obtained within 22 line_6: hours of observing time. ! question: 3 section: 4 line_1: For long-term projects, list the breakdown of exposure time requested for line_2: each cycle. (Cycle 1= first year of HST observing; Cycle 2= second year; etc.) line_4: Cycle 1 22 hours primary, 0 hours parallel line_5: Cycle 2 33.5 hours primary, 0 hours parallel line_6: Cycle 3 33.5 hours primary, 0 hours parallel ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Imaging and spectral observations in the UV will provide information line_2: concerning the response of the stratosphere to variations in solar energy line_3: input. Unlike the IUE, the Faint Object Spectrograph, with a resolution line_4: of one arc second, will allow us to resolve the belt-zone structure and line_5: the planetary camera will yield increased sampling near the limb, line_6: providing information relating to vertical structure. Despite the line_7: Voyager, Galileo and Cassini missions, there will be a lack of coherent line_8: long-term mapping of Jupiter and Saturn. The long baseline of date that line_9: can be obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope will enhance the line_10: usefulness of the high resolution data and characterize the seasonal line_11: response of the polar regions. The nominal lifetime for HST is 17 years, line_12: less than a Saturnian year, however, coverage of both hemispheres of the line_13: two planets through this interval will generate a unique data set that line_14: will provide strong constraints on the models for seasonal atmospheric line_15: effects. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: Calculations for the FOS have been carried out by L. Trafton. The line_2: exposures have been set to achieve signal-to-noise ratios from 10 to 50. line_3: The exposures for the PC have been calculated by E. Danielson and R. West. line_4: For most of the filters, the exposures are less than a minute and do not line_5: impact the scheduling of multi-filter sequences as much as the read-out line_6: times. Throughout the proposal we have indicated that we desire an line_7: update of the PC and FOS exposures to optimize the amount of data acquired line_8: while maximizing the signal-to-noise ratios. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: We have not requested any real-time observations, however in order line_2: to use a peak-up mode of acquisition on Io in an efficient manner it line_3: is necessary to sequence the data for several orbits to utilize a single line_4: guide star acquisition. We have requested an update to identify the line_5: longitude of the Red Spot and an active plume. Using ground-based line_6: observations the location of these cloud systems in System III longitude line_7: can be specified, as we did with Voyager, several months in advance. line_8: We will also need to specify the longitude of the sun-lit limb in the line_9: TORUS mode after we know whether our observations will be pre- or post- line_10: opposition. Like all other observers who are observing solar system line_11: objects, we will need information concerning the variation of the solar line_12: UV and standard instrument calibrations. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: The team will be organized in two categories; area of investigation and line_2: data set of primary interest. Reta Beebe and Laurence Trafton will have line_3: the chief responsibility for ascertaining that the imaging and spectral line_4: data undergoes preliminary reduction and calibration at the STScI and line_5: those components that are desired by the individual investigators are line_6: delivered for analysis. Efforts will be made to verify and archive line_7: secondary products, such as map projected data or I/F as a function of line_8: latitude, longitude, and incident and emergent angles. Other investi- line_9: gators plan to be present during the observing period to familiarize line_10: themselves with the data acquisition procedures and the preliminary data line_11: reduction. A three-day working meeting of the team will be held during line_12: the first 6 months that the investigators have the data for a given line_13: cycle. The goal of these sessions is to encourage collaboration, divide line_14: the data reduction effort and avoid duplication of effort. In addition, line_15: sub-group meetings, consisting of disciplines or geographical regions line_16: will be utilized. The investigators who are participating in this pro- line_17: posal are experienced in reduction of spacecraft data and have access line_18: to established data reduction facilities at their institutions. Costs line_19: associated with the use of these facilities are reflected in their line_20: individual budgets. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: This data is complementary to the GTO request by Westfall's group. If line_2: it is separated in time by a month or more, the two data sets will be more line_3: valuable as a dynamics pair that will allow investigation of the evolution line_4: of active storm centers in Jupiter's atmosphere. Spectroscopic observations line_5: by other GTO observers will enhance the long-term yield from this data line_6: set. It is our request for near simultaneous PC and FOS observations that line_7: make this proposal unique. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: L. Trafton, E. Danielson, and R. West are involved in other current HST line_2: proposals within this observing cycle. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: New Mexico State University supports the academic year salary of the line_2: PI, Reta Beebe, as is the case for all co-investigators who are not line_3: requesting personal salaries within their budgets. Computor facilities line_4: and software for data reduction and analysis have been developed and are line_5: in position to receive this data at the individual institutions. In line_6: addition, NMSU will provide facilities and support personnel to host line_7: the annual working meetings. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: BEEBE fname: RETA category: PI inst: NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY ! ! end of general_form_address records !
