Abstract This proposal defines a long term sensitivity monitoring program for the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph. It uses one UV standard star, BD+75d325. BD+75d325 will be observed once to establish continuity with the early SV calibration. The star is observed with the LSA and SSA. The exposure times are short. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Scientific Justification. The sensitivity of the GHRS is likely to change slowly with time, as the optics and detectors experience prolonged exposure to the space environment. Accurate sensitivity curves are needed for planning exposure times before an observation, and for reducing data after the fact. A simple program is needed to monitor and update the sensitivities by making observations of UV standard stars several times per year. This proposal was developed jointly by the GHRS IDT calibration scientists and the STScI Instrument Scientists. It represents the transition from establishment of the baseline calibration by the IDT to the long term maintenance by the STScI. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of special scheduling requirements. Exposure times are based on observed count rates in SV. The goal is to obtain between 1000 - 10000 cts/diode in each substep bin. High S/N is required to identify small changes in sensitivity. Bright stars are used to keep the total test time as short as possible. The same star is used for all gratings to allow easy intercomparison and cross calibration. Acquisition exposures are made with mirrors on the same detector side as the grating, so side switches between acquisitions and spectra are not needed. Separate acquisitions for groups of related exposures should allow each to be an independent scheduling unit. This should provide maximum reasonable scheduling flexibility. Total test time is derived from the resource estimator. The test should be structured as one scheduling unit: PART 1: lines 5-95 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11. Address Information Name: DENNIS C.
