Abstract We propose to obtain ST WF/PC surface photometry of NGC 4314. NGC 4314 exhibits anomalous nuclear activity indicative of on-going star formation. Multicolor surface photometry with 0.1 to 0.4 arcsec resolution will afford an opportunity to explore the global interrelationships between gas clouds, dust, star formation, and stellar populations with detail never before obtained. The expected maximum resolution for for NGC 4314 is 10 parsecs. All exposures will be secured with WFPC II after refurb mission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Franz LOWELL OBSERVATORY USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The bandpasses are chosen for comparison with ground-based observations and to obtain a long wavelength baseline to allow an effective probe for young stars and into dusty regions. The observing times are estimated from much lower-resolution ground-based observations (see References) and from the WF/PC User's Guide. These observations will be made with the WF/PC in WF configuration. Two exposures in each bandpass will be summed and compared to allow cosmic ray detection and removal. Sky brightness data will be obtained from the outer sections of the 2.57 x 2.57 arcmin field of view, since the galaxy has B(SURF) > 25 per square arcsec at these distances from the nucleus. Assuming refurb mission in late 1993, we expect to observe NGC 4314 in April 1994 (Cycle 4). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Multicolor surface photometry with 0.10 to 0.4 arcsec resolution will afford an opportunity to explore the global interelationships between gas clouds, dust, star formation, and stellar populations with detail rarely, if ever, obtained with ground-based instrumentation. The best resolution that can be routinely obtained from the ground is about 0.5 arcsec. The best obtained for this galaxy is about 2 arcseconds. Assuming Ho = 100, the expected resolution for NGC 4314 is 8 parsecs resolution, or 16 parsec resolution, if post-observation pixel summation is required. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Dark-Time required due to low surface brightness of objects. Dark-Time required due to terminator-induced spacecraft jitter. Observations should be scheduled at least ten minutes after terminator crossing, to minimize loss of lock potential. WFPC II is required, since no known computer processing can restore a point spread function and result in accurate photometry of extended sources. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Initial data reduction and preliminary analysis will be carried out at the STScI, using SDAS. We assume that flat-field, bias, dark frame, and Kelsall Dot exposures will be provided by the calibration database. Final analysis will be done at the University of Texas. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Sun SparcStation 1+ running IRAF ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. Proposers may require access to STScI resources for preparation of final color- coded and grey-scale maps for publication. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Using the WFPC II, we propose to obtain U, B, V, and I band surface photometry of NGC 4314 (active nuclear ring) Resolutions will range from 0.1 to 0.4 arcsec. These basic data will provide constraints for theories of gas accretion, reddening, and star formation in galactic nuclei. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
