Abstract This proposal has several objectives. First, the imaging data will be used to determine the precise positions of the centers of the galaxies, to see if the central region is bright enough to do long slit spectroscopy with the FOC f/48 spectrograph, and finally to study the radial intensity and color profile in the spectral region between 2200A and 4500A. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. UV images of NGC3862 to study the spectral index of the jet will be obtained with the FOC F220W filter. New observations of the galaxies NGC4649 and IC1459 will be obtained in order to study the nuclear light profile and to determine if it will be possible to obtain spectra of the nuclues with HST. FOC images at f/96 will be used to a) locate precisely the center of several elliptical galaxies, b) determine if these centers are bright enough for f/48 velocity dispersion measurements c) study the radial profile from 2500A to 4500A and d) perform spectroscopic observations to determine the velocity dispersion in the central region. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The High resolution and the UV sensitivity of the HST FOC combination offer a truely unique chance opportunity to study the nucleii of nearby galaxies ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.
