Scientific Category 3. Proposal For 4. Proposal Type 5. Continuation ID QUASARS & AGN GTO/HRS Sub Category QUASAR EMISSION ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Edward Beaver UC, SAN DIEGO USA (619)534-1878 RESEARCH PHYSICIST ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract We will observe various emission lines in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469. These data will be compared to optical emission lines to look for line profile differences that would indicate spatial and ionization stratification within the broad-line region. Line ratios will also yield information about the photoionization conditions in the BLR. NGC 7469 is of interest since Hbeta has a strong red asymmetry which is uncommon in Seyfert galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. GENERAL FORM Proposal 3211c PI: Edward Beaver Proposal Title: ULTRAVIOLET LINE PROFILES OF AGN -- CYCLE 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Edward Beaver UC, SAN DIEGO USA Edward Rosenblatt UC, SAN DIEGO USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. We will use the FOS in high resolution mode to observe Lyman-alpha, CIV, CIII], and MgII for NGC 7469. Cycle 1: High Dispersion FOS observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. NGC 7469 has been observed with the IUE, however, the spectral shape and faintness of the object have precluded obtaining data of sufficient quality for detailed line profile studies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Data will be reduced and analyzed on UCSD VAX computers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Optical emission lines will be observed nearly simultaneously at Lick Observatory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. UCSD will supply computer facilities and material for ground-based observations and data analysis. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Spectroscopic observations of emission-lines in NGC 7469 will be used to constrain physical conditions in the BLR. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
