Abstract This is a new proposal submitted in March, 1992 to define PC exposures of the core of Eta Carinae. The new PC images include explicit exposures of a nearby star for the purpose of deriving a valid PSF. The orientation is specified to allow Eta Carinae itself to remain visible on the PC when the pointing is shifted to position the PSF star on PC6. The images are made in a line free violet continuum and in a line free red continuum F631N (this is a O I line filter, but there is negligible O I emission in the core of Eta Carinae.) Description of proposed observations. Lines 100 - 180 PC exposures of core of Eta Carinae in violet and red continuum F336W and F631N (no OI in Eta Car) exposure times based on cycle 0 exposure levels position target near center of PC 6 - away from bad column. Lines 200 - 280 exposures of nearby star for PSF measurement at same position as Eta Car on PC6. The specified orientation will allow Eta to still be visible on the PC. These images are primarily for the purpose of studying the very inner regions of Eta Carinae. They will also give good information about the Homunculus as it appears in scattered continuum light, but will not be well suited for studying the fainter outer condensations. Each filter has a short and three longer exposures. Short will give 3000 cts/pixel at peak of image. Long will give good S/N in wings of PSF without blooming core. Offset by 1/2 arc sec between longs to sample dfferent pixels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Spatial resolution needed to study inner core and small scale structures in Homunculus, and to measure displacements and proper motions of outwardly moving ejecta. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Orientation requested for PC images will allow the PSF star to be measured on PC6 at the same position that the core was recorded. At the same time, Eta Car itself and the Homunculus will still be visible on PC8, 5 or 7. This will give additional exposures of the primary target with no additional observing time. If the special orientation is not used Eta Car would likelly be out of the field of view during the PSF exposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Images will be calibrated and deconvolved using the special psf star. The objective is to study the multiple cmponents visible in the core in violet and red light, free of nebular emission lines. We will analyze the relative positions and brightnesses of the components, and try to detect proper motions relative to the brightest member. These images will provide a good baseline for future monitoring of the evolution of the core of Eta Carinae. The astrometric reference stars of Walborn, Blanco, Thackeray (1978, Ap.J., 219, 498) will be used as the primary position standards. Motions of individual knots within the Homunculus will also be measured. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. An early set of WFC and PC images were obtained in cycle 0 as part of GTO proposal 1186.
