Abstract Galaxies with starburst nuclei show evidence for large populations of massive hot stars existing in a small volume in the nucleus. This phenomenon may be a precursor to more dramatic activity powered by the evolutionary endproducts of millions of high mass stars. Multiband images obtained with the Wide Field Camera will be used to invesitgate the location, size, structure, colors and luminosity of the starburst region. Ultraviolet spectroscopy with the High Resolution Spectrograph will provide direct insight into the nature of the hot stars. Interstellar gas in the target galaxy, and in or near the Milky Way will be probed by high resolution observations of selected absorption lines. This prop contains only the cycle 1 exposures. Description of proposed observations. GHRS G140L spectroscopy of the nucleus of NGC7714 will be done in cycle 1. Three carrousel positions will allow the spectral region 1157 - 1867 to be recorded. The central wavelengths are 1300, 1525 and 1725 A. Step pattern 2 with default comb, standard fpsplit, and two repeats will be used. Each carrousel position will have a total of 40 minutes of exposure time, divided equally into 4 fpsplit subexposures and 2 repeats, for a total of eight 5 minute subexposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The WFC exposures of NGC 7714 will have been taken in cycle 0. IUE spectra in the HRS 'GTOCAT' data base were used to estimate N2 acquisition count rates. The same IUE spectra were used with the BD+75d325 calibration curve for G140L to make better estimates of the expected count rates. I expect a peak count rate of about 0.7 cts/diode/sec near 1350 A. The long wavelength cutoff at 1867 should be very close to the dark count limit of 0.01 cts/diode/sec. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. The star formation regions in galaxies with starburst nuclei will be studied with narrow band imagery obtained with the Wide Field Camera, and ultraviolet spectroscoy observed with the High Resolution Spectrograph. Images will be obtained in the Ultraviolet, in standard U, B, V and R band passes, and through appropriate H Alpha filters. Spectroscopy with a resolving power near 2000 and signal to noise ratio of 25 will be obtained in the 1200 to 1800A region. The size, morphology, environment, stellar content and luminosity of the starburst regions will be studied. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
