Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone E. margaret Burbidge UC, SAN DIEGO USA (619) 452-4477 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract Three main scientific goals are to determine the emission-line properties in the UV of low-z QSOs, to look for L alpha -forest absorption shortward of L alpha emission to examine evolutionary effects, and to observe L alpha absorption in QSOs which have known metallic-line narrow absorption-line systems at z(absorption) << z(emission). There are objects of special interest included in the sample (e.g. 1548 + 114 A, B). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. This topic contains 12 objects which will be observed with G130H, G190H, G270H and the prism of the FOS. S/N will be 15-20 allowing us to measure emission as well as absorption lines. One additional object will be observed only with G160L, and one will be observed with G400H because the spatial resolution of the ST is required. Cycle 1: all exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. We need UV spectroscopy from the atmospheric cut-off to rest Lyman alpha. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The SV prerequisite programs for all FOS observations in this program are: Prop ID 2195 FOS Target Acquisition Tests All observations Prop ID 1317 Int./Ext. Wavelength Offsets 1st target Prop ID 1318 Spectral Flat Fields 1st target Prop ID 1320 Absolute Spectrophotometry 1st visit of bright targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. We will schedule nearby ground-based observations at Lick Observatory if we are given enough lead time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. This program is designed to tackle a carefully chosen statistical sample of objects, and, while some interesting results may emerge from study of single members of the sample, the project will not be complete until some 80% of the data has been obtained and analyzed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. We will observe a sample of 12 QSOs with the high resolution gratings on the FOS to determine the evolution of Lyman alpha absorption below z = 1.6, and to make a statistical study of the emission properties of low-z quasars with much better S/N than is possible with IUE. We will also study the differences in the absorption along two closely spaced paths. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
