Abstract Observe for the first time the extreme UV rest spectrum of QSOs with z > 3.1, to examine HeI and HeII in absorption and/or emission; perform Gunn-Peterson test for smooth intergalactic helium, determine and compare density of Lyman alpha forests of narrow absorptions per unit z; look for correlations of strongest narrow Lyman alpha absorptions with narrow helium absorptions; look for associated or intervening galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. 7 high redshift quasars will be observed with the FOS at low dispersion. Those with enough light will be observed with the high resolution gratings to S/N ~ 15. 0014 will be observed at high resolution in any case. Cycle 1: All Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. HST observations are needed to observe the UV with sufficient spectral resolution and flux-gathering power. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. We need to look at the low resolution data to decide which of the high resolution observations are possible. We must make low resolution observations at L alpha at the absorption redshifts to determine whether there is enough light for the high resolution observations. The SV prerequisite programs for all FOS observations in this program are: Prop ID 2195 FOS Target Acquisition Tests All observations Prop ID 1317 Int./Ext. Wavelength Offsets 1st target Prop ID 1318 Spectral Flat Fields 1st target Prop ID 1320 Absolute Spectrophotometry 1st visit of bright targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. We will try to schedule near simultaneous ground based observations if we are given enough lead time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. Our experience with high z quasars at the Lyman limit suggests that we will only be able to make half the high resolution observations. This is reflected in the requested observing time. Because of the statistical nature of this program, it should not be considered viable until 75% of the observations have been done. No data should be released until a year from this date. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. FOS spectra will be obtained of 5 quasars with z > 3.1 to examine HeI and HeII in absorption and/or emission and perform the Gunn-Peterson test for smooth intergalactic helium. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
