Abstract Images of many objects having AGN will be obtained, representing a range of typed physical properties. Roll deconvolution with the FOC f/288 mode can yield diffraction-limited resolution at short UV wavelengths, for example 0.02 arc sec at 200 nm; selected high-resolution measurements will be made of several nearby and bright AGN. Additional long-slit spectroscopy will complement these observations. Both imaging and spectroscopy is needed. For representative objects of those AGN which are relatively nearby we plan to obtain f/96 images in [OIII], the nearby continuum and where possible H-Beta. The optical continuum images will also be used to determine the exact position of the nucleus for later acquisition. This will be followed by imaging in the ultraviolet [C III] 1908 and CIV 1549 emission line doublets. These images should resolve the narrow line region and the transition zone between the narrow and broad line regions. Prime targets for special study are NGC4486, NGC4151, NGC1068 and 3C273. Roll deconvolution in the ultraviolet will be done for these objects using the F/288 mode. In the case of the two Seyfert galaxies the 0.02" resolution possible might resolve some structure in the broad line region. Finally, for the nearest and brightest objects in each class we will obtain long slit spectroscopy (f/48). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. This project requires the high spatial resolution for imaging and spectroscopy provided by the FOC. To achieve the highest resolution it is necessary to resolve the interference fine structure (speckles) in the telescope point spread function. Only the f/288 mode of the FOC can achieve this at short UV wavelengths since the speckle size at a wavelength of 200 nm is about 0.02". The pixel size at f/288 is 0.007", i.e. 3 x 3 pixels per speckle which is sufficient for an adequate sampling. Short UV wavelengths are advantageous because of the high resolution theoretically possible. Both direct imaging and spectroscopic observations are required. Filter and objective prism images will be obtained in selective emission lines. The intermediate and narrow line regions of both Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies similarly can be obtained at f/96 or f/48 depending on the field required. Long slit spectroscopy (F/48) will be obtained for all three regions. Prime targets for special study are NGC4486, NGC4151, NGC1068 and 3C273. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Dark time is needed for the UV long-slit spectroscopy and CIV imaging because of OI 1304 interference. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.
