Abstract OTA-FGS DIAGNOSTICS The Astrometry Science Team and HDOS need to assess the FGS transfer function as a function of secondary mirror position. This test is intended to be executed as often as possible, each time at a different secondary mirror position. Transfer scans will be observed at the center of each FGS, using both the full aperture F583W and the 2/3 PUPIL. OTA-FGS DIAGNOSTICS The Astrometry Science Team and HDOS need to assess the FGS transfer function as a function of secondary mirror position. This test is intended to be executed as often as possible, each time at a different secondary mirror (SM) position. Following a repositioning of the SM, transfer scans will be observed at the center of each FGS pickle, using both the full aperture F583W and the returned to its pre-test position. Results from this test should greatly accelerate the understanding of the the complex relationship between FGS and OTA contributions to the observed FGS performance, leading to an optimization for guidence and astrometry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. A) Acquire brightest available Guide Stars in FGS 1 and 2 in fine lock if magnitude < 13th, otherwise coarse track. 1) Perform 1 transfer scans in FGS3 with the clear aperture at pickle center. 2) Repeat 1 with the 2/3 aperture. B) Repeat A with FGS2 as astrometer. C) Repeat A with FGS1 as astrometer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The bright target star is required to provide high signal to noise in the transfer scan data. The brightest available guide stars are desired to provide highest fidelity fine lock guidance for removal of vehicle jitter when data is analyzed. 32 Kbit data are required. If finelock guidence is not available, the observations should proceed using the ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Initial data reduction and analysis will be carried out with the use of algorithms and software developed by STAT. Such reductions and analyses will require the use of data processing facilities both at STScI and at the home institutions of STAT members.
