Scientific Justification. This test consists of two pictures of a selected asteroid. One image will be tracked using TRACK #51 style command at the apparent rate of the asteroid. The second image will combine the motion of asteroid with a single-line, celestial grame, continuous spatial scan. This test will verify the ability of the ground system and the spacecraft to observe planetary targets using tracking approximated with straight-line motion on the plane-of-the-sky. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The first image is meant to accurately track an unresolved asteroid. The length of the exposure will ensure that an accurate PSF with tracking can be sampled. The second image adds the motion of a continuous spatial scan to the motion of the asteroid. If successful, the image will contain a pure North-South trail on the image. The third image is a fail-safe image to get a picture of the background star field if the tracking does not work. A trail of the asteroid should also be visible in case of failure. If the tracking does work, the asteroid image core will be saturated but the wings of the PSF will still provide additional confirmation of the validity of the TRACK-51 commanding. The target has been chosen for the the May 1991 time-frame. It will be near opposition, unresolved, and of approxiamately the right magnitude to be useful for the needed exposure duration. If the test time frame shifts from May 1991 a different target must be selected. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
