This effect has been catalogued and trends evident in all target acquisitions performed to date. The test will determine the amount of shift and rotation of each FGS with respect to the WFPC (and therefore to each other). Using each FGS as the astrometer, a series of parallel WFPC exposures will be obtained at 3 roll angles. Any displacement of the target star in the WFPC as a function of roll indicates misalignment. The field in PRAESEPE is on the ecliptic and astrometric measurements are available (J. This test will verify the FGS/FGS alignment calibration and will provide a check on the quality of the onboard relative distortion correction, FGS magnification, and the FGS/FGS alignment matrices. The premise used in the test design is concise, the operational procedure simple, and the data analysis straightforward. The assumption is made that if the FGS/FGS alignment calibration is not accurate, one would see systematic offsets in Mode III acquisition as a function of the dominant FGS and the positions of the dominant and sub-dominant guide stars within the FGSs. The test will determine the amount of shift and rotation of each FGS with respect to the WFPC (and therefore to each other). Using each FGS as the astrometer, a series of parallel WFPC exposures will be obtained at three different roll angles, separated by 30 degrees. Any displacement of the target star in the WFPC as a function of roll indicates misalignment. Three images will be taken at each roll position. Each of the three will be displaced by an offset (via POS TARG) of 20 arcsec in orthogonal directions (preferably along the FGS X and Y) to determine the WFPC/FGS transformation and identify gross relative distortions within the FGSs. The 20 arcsec maneuver is representative of a standard Mode I target acquisition slew. The same or a minimal number of star pairs will be used to assess the alignment in order to minimize errors introduced by inaccurate target positions. This requirement however does introduce the constraint that the selection of targets is dependent on the roll angle of the telescope. Parts or all of this test will be run periodcally (as needed) to to assess FGS/FGS alignment or whenever there are indications from the other instruments of alignment problems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The Wide Field Camera and each FGS in turn will be used to assess the alignment. Using each FGS as the astrometer in turn, HST will be rolled to angles -30, +30, and 0 degrees from nominal in order to sample extreme fields of view in each FGS. At 'each' roll position, 3 POS TARG offsets will be performed (20" in orthogonal directions) in order to investigate the small scale characteristics of the FGS distortion and to determine the WF2/FGS alignment. The pieces of the test will be scheduled in a way which will allow easy manipulation or simplification for repeat activities, such as decreasing the number of rolls or using only one astrometry series. Because of both engineering telemetry needs and the intricate pointing and guide star requirements, this proposal requires MANUAL TRANSFORMATION and SCHEDULING. Please see Question 5. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. This is an HST alignment diagnostic test. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The requirements defined below are non-standard and therefore manual transformation and scheduling is essential. Please contact McCollough (SPSS) and Balzano (SCS) for special procedures. 1. Guiding Requirements: Coarse Track; the astrometers will be used in the default fine lock mode. 2. 32K Engineering Requirements - 32K telemetry needed for analysis (PASS alignment software and jitter). Special PMDB manipulation and commanding needed to encompass alignments - and minimize set up overheads. 3. Guide Star Requirements - The SAME guide star pair MUST be used for the series of 3 rolls within an astrometry FGS in order to achieve test goals. Therefore the pair must be able to support +/- 30 degree roll maneuevers. Each roll series will require an orbit. Place the 3-roll series in a SINGLE OBSET (per FGS) to satisfy the guide star requirement. If possible, the target star for one astrometer could be used as the dominant guide star for another astrometer sequence. This latter requirement is a preferable (but not mandatory) selection since it minimizes errors introduced by target positions. 4. Dominant/Sub-Dom Requirements - The Dominant guiding FGS must be cycled through all 3 FGSs in order to check the acquisition performance of each. This will require manual PMDB manipulation. There is no requirement on which FGS is dominant for a particular FGS astrometer but that they are cylced. 5. Scheduling requirements - The set of 6 exposures (3 WF2 and 3 astrometry) at each roll are NON-INT to force completion within a single visibility window. The entire proposal is specified as NO GAP because of the the complicated off-nominal roll requirements and for stability reasons. 6. Orientation/ ROLL requirements - The +/- 30 degree rolls should be made with respect to the nominal roll at the start of the a particular FGS series. What is important is getting a relative offset of about 30 degrees in order to sample a large range in a particular FGS. The POS TARGs are given with respect to the proposal coordinate system centered on the pyramid apex. The POS TARG offsets given will result in a nearly radial (and orthogonal) 20" maneuever for each roll. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Section 5 outlines in detail the special requirements for this test. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The alignment between the WF2 and each FGSs will be derived by fitting the coordinates for the targets as a function of POS TARG and roll. FGS/FGS alignment matrices will be derived from these results and compared to the current PDB and onboard tables. The magnification and distortion will be checked as a function of 3 positions in each FGS over a small field of about 20 arcsec each. The engineering telemetry from the guiding FGSs will be analyzed to confirm the performance of the onboard software acquisition. The OMS facility will be used to extract astrometry and telemetry values, existing transformation programs and spreadsheet storage will be used to store and analyze the position data. Existing image processing facilities at the STScI will be used to reduce the WFPC frames and perform plate calibrations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
