OF ASTRONOMY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract Using a standard star (V 8.2 mag.) in the CVZ near the open cluster NGC188, the instantaneous locations of the centers of the acquisition aperture and various small science apertures will be determined with respect to the V2V3 reference system. The ultimate goal of this third part of the Mission Support Calibration (MSC) procedure is to locate the aperture centers relative to the V2V3 reference frame with an uncertainty not exceeding 0.05 arcsec. It is preceded by Phase I (Deflection Coordinate Calibration) and Phase II (Coarse Alignment). This test is unique to OV. A different test has been submitted for SV purposes. Bless Proposal Title: MSC/SV FINE FGS/HSP ALIGNMENT (PHASE III) SV VERSION ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dr. Mark H. Slovak UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA Prof. Robert C. Bless UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA Dr. Joseph F. Dolan GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. The justification for this procedure is to instantaneously locate the centers of the target acquisition and various selected science apertures relative to the V2V3 reference system with an uncertainty not exceeding 0.05 arcsec. The aperture centers will be derived from ST step and dwell grids obtained using a star (V~8.2 mag.) in the CVZ and near the old open cluster NGC188. In order to be able to accurately position the desired object from the acquisition aperture to the appropriate science aperture, the centers of the various apertures relative to the V2V3 reference frame must be precisely determined. This will aid in the observations of single stars in crowded fields, individual components in close visual binaries and planetary satellites close to the parent planet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The observations will begin with the visual IDT (VIS) configured in the single aperture, acquisition mode and proceed as follows: 1) Mode I target acquisition to position the star (Near NGC188) in the finding aperture (10 arcsec); 2) Command the DF-224 to execute four single axis step and dwell maneuvers across the edge of the aperture, each axis being 90 degrees apart. The HSP will be commanded to do a 20x20 image of the finding aperture with 0.25 arcsecond steps and centered on the edge of the aperture where the stellar image will disappear. Each step and dwell maneuver should begin at a radius of 4.8 arcsec from the aperture center and be 0.4 arcsec in length, sampled at 0.05 arcsec steps. At each step the flux in the image is collected and the FGS encoder positions are recorded. 3) Reposition star to center of finding aperture and offset to a selected 1.0 arcsec aperture. Command the DF-244 to perform four single axis step and dwell maneuvers, as described in step 2 above. Each step and dwell maneuver should begin at a radius of 0.3 arcsec from the center and each axis length should again be 0.4 arcsec, sampled at 0.05 arcsec steps; 4) Relocate the star to the coarse center of the finding aperture to position the target and obtain an area scan. Also record FGS encoder readings; 5) Repeat steps (3) - (4) for one additional aperture. Then repeat steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 for a third aperture and then repeat steps 3 and 4 again for the first aperture to test repeatibility. For IDT#3(VIS) the selected apertures are: 1.0-B/F450W, 1.0-A/F160LP, 1.0-A/F620W, 1.0-B/F450W (repeat) 6) Repeat steps (1) - (5) for UV2 using the following apertures: 1.0-A/F160LP, 1.0/F140LP, 1.0-B/F248M, 1.0-A/F160LP (repeat) 7) Repeat steps (1) - (5) for POL , using the following apertures: 0.65-D/F160LP, F327M/POL0, F277M/POL135, 0.65-D/F160LP (repeat) and changing the parameters in the following steps: Step (1): finding aperture is 6.1 arcsec Step (2): begin step and dwell 2.8 arcsec from center. 8) Repeat steps (1) - (5) for UV1 using the following apertures: 1.0/F140LP, 1.0-A/F240W, 1.0-B/F248M, 1.0/F140LP (repeat) All scans are in spacecraft coordinates. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Real-time target acquisition (Mode I) is necessary in order to position the target star precisely in the relevant IDT finding aperture. Special orientations are required in order to perform the spatial scans along different position angles across the selected apertures. All scans are in spacecraft coordinates. Telemetry format FN is required for FGS encoder position data. Scan parameters are in aperture (S/C) coordinates. HSP tests iA through iG, i1, 01a, 01b, and 03 must be complete before this test is begun. The S/C DATA lines are provided to capture the FGS encoder data. The durations of the S/C DATA lines should equal those of the corresponding primary HSP lines. The given durations for the S/C lines are based on approximate HSP overheads and should be adjusted if needed to correspond to the actual HSP exposure durations. Fine lock is required for this test. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction consists of deriving the count rates (or flux) for all the apertures on each IDT and associating these values with the appropriate step and dwell grid point coordinates. These data are displayed as an intensity versus position plot. In the data analysis, a smooth function will be analytically fit to the intensity versus position data for each set of axes or edge data. The V2V3 offsets are then determined, using algorithms which find the maximum of the first derivative of the intensity-position function or the half-intensity (50%) point. Using ground-based calibrations of the aperture positions, and the aperture edge positions as determined above, the aperture centers are located with respect to the edges. Finally, the aperture centers, with respect to the V2V3 axes, are derived by adding the offsets from coarse centers to the centers derived above and adding the resulting sum to the initial pointing coordinates. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Data reduction and analysis will be supported at the Astronomy Department at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
