Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Dr. Holland Ford SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INST USA 301-338-4803 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract A test will be performed to verify the point souce target acquisition software of the FOS, as well as the blind offset mode. The test will first image a star of a close (separation 15") double in the large aperture, and then allow the binary search onboard software to determine the centering for that object. A blind offset will then be performed to the second star of the pair, and a camera image obtained to verify the centering. The test will be repeated once to test for repeatability. This program (along with the other target acquisition tests) is the highest priority SV activity to be performed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 3137c PI: Dr. Holland Ford Proposal Title: FOS-V4 TARGET ACQUISITION - BLIND OFFSET-REVISED ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Scientific Justification. Target acquisition is THE most important task to be verified in SV. The blind offset technique will probably not be used very frequently, but still needs to be tested. This test is to be performed one time here and once via prop 1428. This repetition will allow us to estimate the centering errors for this mode, which will, in turn, give us information on the accuracy of FOS photometry, as well as the accuracy for radial velocity measurements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. In this test, we will observe one (1) close pair of stars to verify the functionality of the binary search target acquisition software of the FOS, as well as the blind offset capability. We will observe the object in the camera mode to check on its initial position, then let the software determine the centering of the object. We will then perform a blind offset to the second member of the pair, and take a camera image to check on its centering. CONTINUATION OF COMMENT FROM EXP. LOG. LINE 2: first SAM centers the offset star in the 4.3" aperture, and is FOS created. The second SAM is a blind pointing to the primary object, and is DF-224 controlled. The DF-224 also controls the move to the science aperture. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Not applicable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. SV prerequisites: Verification of mode II binary search target acquisition mode (Prop 2195). Minimum/Delta Plan objects: all observations are minimum plan This program may be done in PCS coarse track, if necessary. Pointing stability of 10% of the smallest aperture used (1.0") - 0.10" - is required. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. This test is not stray light sensitive. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will be performed at the ST ScI, and the analysis will be performed using FOS IDT computer facilities. Since this test is strictly a verification, no pipeline calibration data will be obtained. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Data analysis, research assistant support, and funding will be provided under NASA's FOS GTO contract(s). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
