Abstract This proposal defines the procedure for mapping in deflection space the projected aperture locations on the cathode faceplates of each of the four (4) UV IDTs on the HSP. The aperture mapping will be accomplished using the earth to illuminate the aperture plate for each IDT; an IDT area scan of several apertures will be made. These data will be compared with the deflection coordinates determined from ground based testing in order to map out any systematic offsets or stretching of the projected aperture pattern as a function of the combined ST/HSP operating environment. Bright earth is used for IDT #2 and #4 NOTE: THis is RPSS file 1526. GENERAL FORM Proposal 3135c PI: Prof. Robert C. Richards UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA Dr. Joseph F. Dolan GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. The justification for this test is to accurately determine the locations of the projected apertures on each of the IDT cathode faceplates. This is an essential calibration procedure which must be done in order to properly observe with the HSP. By comparing the derived aperture positions with those from ground-testing, any systematic shifts of the projected aperture pattern can be ascertained. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The observations consist of illuminating the aperture plates of each IDT, using the earth, and performing an IDT area scan of selected filter strips and apertures. Bright earth is used for IDTs #2 and #4 (UV1 and UV2) . The scans of the filter strips will be 16 X 60 pixels in size, taken at 0.4 arcsec steps, with a sample time of 10 msec. A 30 X 32 step area scan using 0.6 arcsec steps, each with 10 msec integration times, will be made over the finding apertures. The beam will then be deflected to a 1 arcsec aperture and a 30X32 scan taken at 0.3 arcsec steps with 10 msec integration times will be carried out. The same procedure will be performed at at 0.4 arc second aperture with 0.1 arc sec steps. This entire process will then be repeated with the integration time increased to 100 msec. IDTs #2 and #4 (UV1 and UV2, respectively) will be calibrated in this fashion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The following tests must be completed before this test is begun: HSP iA through iG and i1. This test must be completed before HSP-01b is begun. This test should be scheduled to avoid the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). Note: A modified version of this test (HSP-01a-OV) should be conducted in OV. This test is done four times in SV. The test should be done in "cold", "hot", and intermediate temperature orbits in order to thoroughly map out the nature and magnitude of any detected image motion of the various IDT cathodes as a function of temperature. The orbits should be scheduled to avoid passage through the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). Pointing Stability: Coarse Track is understood to have less than 19 marcsec stability. That is satisfactory for all observations in the 10" and 1.0" UV1, UV2, and VIS IDT apertures, the PMT, and the 6.0" (finding) POL IDT aperture. HSP requires fine lock for all observations in the 0.65" POL IDT apertures and all 0.4" apertures. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data reduction and analysis procedures are the same for each IDT: the two- dimensional cathode faceplate intensity images produced by the area scanning process will be examined and the center of each of the apertures determined using an intensity-weighted centroiding algorithm. The (x,y)-image coordinates of the aperture centers will be transformed into the appropriate deflection coordinate system for each detector. The derived aperture locations will be compared with the results from ground-based testing to check for possible translations or rotations of the aperture pattern. The differential distortions that become apparent will be correlated with the detector temperature, and appropriate results supplied to the Calibration Data Base (CDB). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Data reduction and analysis will be supported at the Space Astronomy Lab University of Wisconsin in Madison. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
