Scientific Justification. See Abstract. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Phase IIIb/IVa of Aperture Locations will provide a fine measure of the FOS aperture locations in V2V3 by rastering a star on a fine grid to find the maximum throughput for small apertures. This technique provides the most precise V2V3 locations and may provide the most precise locations of the larger apertures from the relative positions of Phase I. A refined plate scale and orientation can be derived from the V2V3 separation of the upper and lower 0.5 arcsec apertures. The grid for the 0.5 arcsec apertures is 0.5x0.5 arcsec with 0.05 arcsec steps. Each detector side should begin and end with flat field aperture maps to determine the current detector coordinates of the apertures used. A WF/PC image of the stellar field should be obtained in parallel with FOS observations of the star for boresight testing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Mode I real-time data will be used to monitor the start of the stellar observations. Onboard software will be used for subsequent target acquisitions. Start spatial scans in center of aperture. Do not offset s/c to center scan on aperture. Perform spatial scans in digicon (X,Y) coordinates. Record FGS encoder values during the spatial scans. The dwell times on the spatial scan form are determined as follows: ....SI overhead .........dump UDL log 30 seconds .........issue BEG ACQ/END ACQ 15 seconds ....Exposure time 4 seconds ....Slew time 10 seconds OV/SV Prerequisitites: Aperture Calibration Phase IIIb (Prop 1444) performed at least 14 days prior to this test. Minimum Plan/Delta Plan: All observations are minimum plan. Pointing stability of 10% of the smallest aperture used (0.5") - 0.05" - is required. For the TALED observations, a constant absolute Y-base is required, and is Y(4.3") - 600.85 Y units. The value of Y(4.3") will be determined in OV proposals 2188 and 1441, which, due to scheduling requirements external to this proposal, should occur at least 18 days prior to the observations in the present proposal. Data reduction will be performed at the ST ScI, using FOS IDT computer hardware. The results of this aperture location calibration are relevant to the project data base, so that the priority is very high.
