Abstract The combination of spatial and spectral resolution provided by the HST is ideally suited to a synoptic study of seasonal and interannual variability on Mars. We propose a three year program of Mars observations which will enable us to address the following objectives: multispectral mapping of geological surface units, quantitative study of seasonal and interannual variations in albedo features, the diurnal behavior of martian clouds, observation of a classic dust storm season, measurements of the atmospheric concentration of ozone and the derived water vapor abundance, and observations of seasonal polar cap changes for comparison with earlier data sets. Thirteen sequences of observations are proposed to map the martian globe and to provide repeated observations of the regions of greatest scientific interest; these use the PC to observe Mars in visible and near UV wavelengths and the FOS to map ozone absorption. The sequences are designed for particular martian seasonal dates relevant to the scientific objectives. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. The proposed observations, which extend over three years, are designed to provide synoptic (global) monitoring of Mars at judiciously selected seasons. The period includes two oppositions when multi spectral imaging by PC will be used for unit mapping of portions of the planet's surface. Cloud monitoring sequences in Cycles 1 and 3 will image Mars in such a way as to provide information on the diurnal development of the interesting "W" cloud complex. Cycle 2 includes a large portion of the classic dust storm season on Mars; during this period, the regions on Mars in which global and local dust storms develop (Hellas and Solis Planum) will be imaged frequently to monitor dust activity. Whenever possible, sequences have been designed to monitor the same season in two consecutive years in order to quantify inter- annual variability. All sequences include PC imaging using standard blue (F413M) and red (F673N) filters which are similar to those used for most Viking and Planetary Patrol images; comparison of these two wavelengths separates surface and atmospheric effects. Ozone concentrations, which are related to water abundance, will be studied using both uv filters on PC and meridional scans using FOS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. HST provides a spatial resolution on Mars which is comparable to that of Viking approach images near opposition and which is better at all times than that of the best pictures obtained from Earth. The portion of a martian year which can be observed by HST without violating the solar constraint is longer than that normally used by terrestrial astronomers, permitting much more complete monitor- ing of the martian seasonal cycle and more opportunity to observe interannual variability. Comparisons of HST observations near opposition with Viking images will be very useful in mapping geo- logical units and searching for interannual changes due to dust. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Scientifically, the relatively large number of exposures is necessary to provide the desired coverage of all longitudes on Mars at various seasons. Therefore the overhead time is large. Because Mars is a bright target, even on a flux per pixel basis, signal to noise considerations are not the primary factor controlling exposure times on PC. Instead, exposure times are determined by the expected variations in flux between pixels due to albedo variations on Mars. The flux per pixel for an average region of Mars does not vary either with position (assuming a Lambertian surface) or time (neglecting the relatively small effects of Mars' eccentric orbit). Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. The seasonal variations which we wish to observe require that our sequences of exposures be executed within roughly +/- two weeks of the optimum date. All of our groups of exposures are designed to observe particular regions of Mars and therefore require con- straints within the 24 hour period. We have relaxed these con- straints as much as possible to avoid conflicts (e.g. our central meridian constraint was selected so that the equivalent time was greater than the HST period). Our sequences were designed so that observations of a particular longitude region require less than one unocculted portion of an orbit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. We plan to use software at STSCI to perform standard geometric and radiometric calibrations. Imaging data will be processed using the Planetary Imaging and Cartography System (PICS) to produce standard map projections from the data and to mosaic them when appropriate. The resulting products will be monochromatic global and/or hemispheric maps of Mars. Projections obtained with different filters will be registered and differencing techniques will be used to map seasonal and diurnal variations. FOS data and ozone data obtained from PC will be reduced into maps of ozone abundance and subsequently used to extract water abund - ance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Much of the hardware and software for image processing will be supplied by the various institutions. The P.I. will devote 10% of his academic year time to the project. The JPL personnel will supply their time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
