OTA-FGS CHARACTERIZATION The Astrometry Science Team and HDOS need to assess the FGS transfer function at various positions within and between the three FGSs. For a given secondary mirror position, this test includes transfer scans at 9 positions within each FGS: five interior points and points at each of the four corners. Radial dependence will be determined by the center scans. FGS to FGS consistancy vs OTA aberration affects will be determined by comparing the neighboring measurements between FGSs. Data from this test will provide important insight to two very important questions concerning the FGSs' ability to acquire and track stars for both spacecraft guidance and astrometry science. To this date, bright star S-curves have never been obtained at any point in the FGS total field-of-view significantly far from pickle center, yet guide star acquisitions are routinely attempted throughout the pickle, using k-factors determined by the measurements performed near pickle center. Furthermore, s-cuvres of the same star have been seen to differ widely from FGS to FGS, with FGS3 out-performing FGS1 and FGS2. This test will determine if the characteristics of the s-curves depend upon location in the focal plane, and by comparing the scans from near corners of adjacent FGSs, if hereto seen differences are due to intrinsic FGS misalignments or OTA distortions. If infact it is learned that inter-FGS s-curve differences are due to the OTA, then it will bee clear that the 3 FGSs can and shuld be used to help charactize the OTA for continuee corrections to the alignment of the secondary mirror and perhaps provide important data for the specification of the second generation instruments. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. A) Acquire brightest available Guide Stars in FGS 1 and 2 in fine lock if magnitude < 13th, otherwise coarse track. 1) Perform 5 transfer scans in FGS3 with the clear aperture in the extreme lower corner of the pickle. 2) Repeat 1 with the 2/3 aperture. 3) Repeat 1 and 2 for the corners and three central y-axis positions, for a total of 9 positions and 18 scans. B) Repeat A with FGS2 as astrometer. C) Repeat A with FGS1 as astrometer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The bright target star is required to provide high signal to noise in the transfer scan data. The brightest available guide stars are desired to provide highest fidelity fine lock guidance for removal of vehicle jitter when data is analyzed. 32 Kbit data are required.
