Abstract We propose to use the FGS in TRANSFER mode to examine, at high angular resolution, two known binary pairs in an effort to establish the orbital elements of these pairs near their periastron, which is not possible from the ground. Knowledge of the orbital parameters will lead to a precise determination of the stellar mass of each component. It is expected that the separations of the component stars in each pair is currently about 0.050 seconds of arc with about one magnitude difference in brightness, thus precise measurements with the Hubble Space Telescope can be readily obtained at this time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Line 1, page 11 defines, for each target, an observation consisting of a set of continuous scans at a scan rate of 0.012 arcsec per sec and a scanlength of 1.2 arcsec per interferometer axis. There are 5 scans/observation (total exposure time 500 seconds), sufficient to permit precise determination of the separations and magnitude dif- ferences. Exposures are requested as follows: Observation (line 1, page 11) of each target during cycle 0. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction and analysis will be carried out with the use of of algorithms and software developed and being developed by ST Astrometry Team members.
