Abstract Whenever the automatic scheduler produces a substantial gap between observations, the Wide Field/Planetary Camera will be used to image a nearby object selected from a list of several hundred low redshift quasars, normal galaxies, peculiar galaxies, and standard survey fields. HST observations will reveal details of the immediate environment of quasars, the nuclei of normal galaxies, the morphology of peculiar galaxies, and the star density in selected fields. The purpose of this program is to increase the efficiency of the HST and to provide scientific data that can be used by many different astronomers. The images acquired in this program will be non -proprietary and will be made available to qualified astronomers via the HST archival system. Images drawn from a set of several hundred targets will be taken with the Wide Field/Planetary Camera whenever there is a substantial time gap between previously scheduled observations. The images will be taken through either the F555W or F785LP filters, and the exposure length will be the maximum time that can be allowed without impacting the scheduled observations. No relative priorities have been given to the individual observations as the order of observation will be decided solely by whichever target will produce a minimum of HST motion when an unscheduled block of time occurs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. This proposal is designed to increase the efficiency of the HST. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The exposure time for each observation will depend upon the amount of unscheduled HST time. For convience in scheduling, each target will be assigned two exposures. The number of objects (several hundred) means that, on average, the distance from a random HST orientation and the nearest target is of the order of 10 degrees. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data will be stored in the HST archive system and made available on a non- proprietary basis to anyone authorized by STScI who wishes to use the images for astronomical research. On special occasions, the Director of STScI may decide that some of the images may be used by NASA personnel or authorized scientists. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Targets must be examined on the GSSS display system to make certain that there are no unacceptably bright stars in the field. This will be done by J.
