Abstract ASTROMETRY FOCUS TEST The Astrometry Science Team wishes to assess the impact of various focus settings on astrometry. To this end we propose an Astrometry Focus Test, This test should be run four times (at both ends and two locations in close proximity to the most probable 'best' focus) during the upcoming mini-sweep. That focus which produces the best results from our tests will be deemed the desirable astrometric focus. The mini-sweep focus test will be run at positions -50 -30 - 10 0 +10 +30 +50 microns which will be denoted as runs 1, 2, 3, ...7. A) Acquire Guide Stars in FGS 1 and 3. 1) Perform position mode acquisitions a) Obtain and measure an 9th magnitude star in FGS2 b) Obtain and measure a 13th magnitude star in FGS2 c) Obtain and measure a 15 th magnitude star with two integration times (1.6s and 0.8s), in FGS2 d) Measure scale star for FGS#2 only 2) VERIFY TRANSFER FUNCTION SCAN a) Drive FGS 2 to expected location of test star of mag 12. b) Repeat for mag 14.5 star. These are multiple scans, 5 passes. B) Repeat A, with 2/3 aperture. (Above tests initially done with clear aperture.) C) Repeat A and B with FGS 3 as Astrometer. D) Repeat A and B with FGS 1 as Astrometer. The mini-sweep focus test will be run at positions -50 -30 -10 0 +10 +30 +50 microns which will be denoted as runs 1, 2, 3, ...7. Description of special scheduling requirements. Faint star necessary to characterize POS and TRANS at bright- esses well below average Guide Star magnitude. Sixth star in FGS #2 necessary for scale check. Proposal must be run in its entirety for each of the following focus setting during the mini-sweep: 1, 3, 5, and 7. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction and analysis will be carried out with the use of algorithms and software developed by STAT.
