The GHRS digicons require several internal calibrations to be performed periodically. These tests were defined in proposal 1457, in which total exposure time for each detector is approx. 92 minutes. We had expected the test to be run every time HV was turned on, and that this would happen perhaps 3 or 4 times. As it now appears that HV may be cycled on and off many times, we defined this abbreviated test to check the detector calibrations frequently, but perform the full test only 4 times total. This will give us confidence in the stability of the detectors, but will not require an unreasonably large amount of time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The short test to be run every 14 +/- 3 days includes: line 1. 70 second dark count measurement line 2. focus check at nominal HV and tweak line 3. 28 sec flat field lamp obs at center coords. lines 4-7. sample mapping function at center Y def. lines 8-11. line mapping function at center X def. For D1 43 lines of data, 6.42 min. exp. time X11 executions = 70.62 minutes For D2 43 lines of data, 16.92 min. exp. time X11 executions = 186.12 minutes The longer test to be run four times includes: line 13. complete PMAP line 12. complete sample mapping function (MSKSCN) line 14. complete line mapping function (TOPBOTSCN) Each execution produces 127 lines of data per detector D1 exposure time 14.82 min. per execution X4 executions = 59.27 minutes total D2 exposure time 44.45 min. per execution X4 executions = 177.80 minutes total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. These same calibrations were run several times during ground based testing in Boulder, and were repeated during A&V. After several executions during OV and SV we will be able to make firm recommendations about the required frequency of repeats during the GO era. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Exposure times were specified based on measured count rates with the internal flat field lamps, and the requirement to obtain approximately 10000 counts per diode. There are no external targets, and no special pointing requirements. All of these observations should be scheduled as interleavers. Both the short and long test contain several exposures. None of the individual exposures exceeds 12 minutes. I have asked that for each test its individual components be grouped within 12 hours. This is not a hard limit, and could be stretched to 16 or 24 hours if absolutely necessary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6.
