Scientific Justification. The aim of this proposal is to check the stability of the aperture locations. This is complementary to the individual SI aperture calibrations, and checks the relative distances between TA apertures, while at the same time checking on the accuracy of Mode 1 WFPC-assisted target acquisitions. The program's aim is accomplished by maneuvering between instruments and by determining the errors using Mode 2 (onboard) TAs. Due to the power limitations of HST, only 2 SI's (plus WFPC) can be checked at each visit. The sequence of observations is the following: 1. PC image of an astromertic standard (in omega Cen) 2. slew to SI 1, image of TA aperture 3. (optional) parallel PC image 4. Mode 2 target acquisition 5. slew to SI 2, image of TA aperture 6. (optional) parallel PC image 7. Mode 2 target acquisition To assess the accuracy of maneuvering, the engeneering data have to be analysed as well, but no requirement is necessary on transmission speed ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The program must be split in several portions, since it is not possible to check all intruments at once. As first priority, FOS and GHRS should be tested (once a month the first 6 months - to check for short term variations -, then every two months). HSP calibration probably depends on need, but FOC should be calibrated as well, especially in case FOC-assited target acquisitions become necessary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. To simplify the execution of this program, it would be extremely convenient to perform it immediately after the WFPC photometric-astrometric calibration program (2877), which uses essentially the same field and would save at least 20 minutes per visit of spacecraft time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
