USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. HRS SV Objectives: 1. Determine the optimal discriminator thresholds for all non -standard detector channels. Discriminator thresholds are derived from PHA data. The standard algorithm sets the threshold at 50% of the energy of the peak of the photoelectron pulse height distribution. On each detector there are a few special and/or slightly noisy channels which require non-standard threshold values. This test calibrates the thresholds for those channels to allow for the maximum number of diodes to be useable for routine science operations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The GHRS is configured for high voltage operation on side 1, and the most recent, default thresholds are loaded and verified. Next, a 10 second flat field followed by a 210 second dark count are taken to verify default threshold performance. A series of 10 sets of flat field and dark count data are then acquired for thresholds of 35 through 80 by increments of 5. The PHA processor is used to load each set of thresholds. Finally, the side 1 default thresholds are reloaded. The procedure is then repeated for side 2. This is an internal test, and requires no special pointing of the telescope. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. All exposures in this test should occur outside of the SAA. This test should be run 2 times during SV. It should be run within 2 weeks after each execution of the PHA test (1459). It is not necessary that side 1 (lines 4-19) and side 2 (20- 35) be scheduled together. Prerequisites: 1. Proposal 1459, Pulse Height Analysis. Scheduling constraints: This test may be run in parallel with other SI tests. It should not be scheduled as an interleaver with other GHRS exposures. The individual segments of this test put thresholds in non-standard values, which are not reset until the end of the test, lines 19 and 35. The "group within 6 hours" is not a hard limit. It is intended to replace the "sequence no gap" in the OV version with a less restrictive requirement for SV. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Count rates during the dark and flat field exposures will be measured as functions of threshold level. Thresholds for the special channels will be derived which bring their response as close as possible to the mean of other channels. Unuseable channels will be entered in the flight software bad diode table and/or the cross-talk table. Noisy and anomalous channels will be identified in the data reduction software. The threshold load PLCP groups in the PDB will be updated with the results. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
