Abstract CYCLE 1 calibration of photocathode granularity for domains covered by G140L in SSA and LSA. The signal-to-noise attainable with GHRS in standard ACCUM modes will normally be limited to a few percent by uncalibrated sensitivity variations on the photocathodes. With prior calibration this limitation can be alleviated. This proposal covers only D1 for which the granularity is to be a severe limitation. A test of high S/N calibration stability is made in ECH-A at 1478 A in SSA , a region where independent GTO/OS observations will obtain high S/N (about 500) in a separate star. HD93521 for G140L will be observed over the full range of wavelength The spacing between wavelength settings in a WSCAN will be chosen such that vertical offsets of 50 microns on the photocathode will occur in order to map out both dimensions of granularity variation in a fully wavelength dependent sense. FPSPLITs will be used to determine the granularity at any wavelength setting. WSCANS on both sides will be taken with COMB=NO to calibrate diode-to-diode sensitivity. ETA UMA will be observed with Ech-A and G140M as S/N test NOTE to exposure log lines: Exposure time has the following derivation. This is exactly what we want implemented: STEP-PATT=5 => 4 bins on spectrum, repeat code=1 2 bins on background, repeat code=8 ------ 34 integrations per pattern * 0.2 sec per integration ------ 6.8 sec per pattern * 4 patterns ------ 27.2 sec * 4 FP-SPLITS = 108.8 A single WSCAN without COMB-addition will be taken over the full wavelength range in order to define the diode-to-diode sensitivity. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Exposure times reflect minimum time to complete a full ACCUM mode observation cycle with four bins and a full COMB and FP-SPLIT pattern. Multiples of basic pattern times sometimes needed for S/N. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Over the FP-SPLITs the photocathode granularity will be manifested as fixed pattern noise that moves through the spectra at the SPLIT cadence. It is then possible to simultaneously solve for both the fixed pattern noise (granularity) and the stellar spectrum. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
