Scientific Justification. The SI Focus Test will measure a point source as seen by the SIs at 5 secondary mirror positions. At each secondary mirror position, the following sequence of observations will be made: a set of FOS spectra acquired during a step and dwell over the 0.1 arcsec aperture using a grating to get wavelength coverage, a high resolution HRS focus diode map of the stellar image, a PC image and FGS astrometric transfer function measurements of the stars within the field. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. This test requires placement of the secondary mirror at the OTA best focus condition at the time of its execution. Therefore, it must be scheduled within 24 hours of an OCS focus calibration or adjustment. In the event that the focus does not satisfy SI requirements, a recommendation will be made for optimization of the focus which represents a compromise for all the SIs. The 'conditional special requirement' is invoked for the following situation: -Because of the long test duration, the target with the greatest visibility is required. Two targets and all exposure lines have been included for later selection. The offset positions of the secondary mirror listed in this proposal are defined in the same direction in which the secondary actuators are last driven to establish the best focus position. Test Procedure: 1. Command the secondary to the position of best focus determined from most recent OCS calibration . 2. Acquire target in FOS and obtain spectral map. 3. Acquire same target in HRS and obtain high resolution focus diode map. 4. Obtain FGS transfer functions on two field stars in two filters:583W,F605W 5. Obtain PC image (PC, ALL, F547M) 600 sec exposure 6. Repeat basic sequence for 5 secondary mirror offsets. 7. RESTORE SECONDARY MIRROR TO POSITION PRIOR TO TEST EXECUTION. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Submitted as an Observatory Level Test ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Test Requirements: - The Secondary Mirror MUST be placed in the position for optimum focus as determined from the most recent OCS focus calibration . All secondary mirror offsets are given from optimum focus fiducial. At the end of the test, the secondary mirror must be placed back in the pre-OLT position. - A 10 minute period has been adopted for REAL-TIME update of the secondary mirror. A longer duration for this activity will seriously impact test efficiency. Stored commanding of the secondary motion, if possible, would significantly decrease test duration and preclude any problems from lost TDRSS contact. Test Requirements con't: - The FOS and HRS observations (and corresponding PC and FGS observations) are performed at the same defocus positions within a relatively short time. This procedure minimizes the number of times the secondary actuators are driven and also insures that FOS and HRS observations are made at exactly the same defocus positions and eliminates the question of the accuracy of repositioning the secondary at a later time. These considerations are felt to outweigh the inherent inefficiency of the procedure. - A contingency sequence has been scheduled to accommodate an unsuccessful sequence at a single secondary mirror position.
