Scientific Category 3. Proposal For 4. Proposal Type 5. Continuation ID SV/MSC Sub Category ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone W. L. Brady PERKIN-ELMER USA 203) 797-5770 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract This activity will provide data on the effects of desorption on the optical alignment of the telescope. The data will permit the calculation of commands for adjusting the secondary mirror to reduce the optical distortions. Mirror adjustments will be made to compensate for the changes in alignment. (Primary mirror adjustments are not anticipated.) NOTE: This proposal has been developed by CTA, Inc at the direction of Keith Kalinowski, HSTP-G. It is based on the OV/1 proposal submitted by P-E, whose PI and co-I's have been explicitly retained here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. GENERAL FORM Proposal 2784c PI: W. L. Brady Proposal Title: SV/OTA DESORPTION FOCUS ADJUSTMENT ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Brady PERKIN-ELMER USA D. G. Winchell PERKIN-ELMER USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. This activity will provide data on the effects of desorption on the optical alignment of the telescope. The data will permit the calculation of commands for adjusting the secondary mirror to reduce the optical distortions. Mirror adjustments will be made to compensate for the changes in the alignment. (Primary mirror adjustments are not anticipated.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The desorption focus adjustment activity should be initiated 15 hours +/-3 hours after completion of the activity "Bootstrap Phase B/Wave Front Measurement and Adjustment" (PEP ID 2148). Two initial focus adjustment activities are conducted, separated in time by a nominal period of 18 hours. For each of these activities, the wavefront errors will be measured using the wavefront sensors in the Normal Mode. The errors determined from the Normal Mode test will be minimized by adjusting the Secondary Mirror. Following the initial two focus activities, the focus operations will alternate between one wherein only the secondary mirror is adjusted, and one wherein the wavefront errors are measured and then the secondary mirror is adjusted. These operations are started in OV and continued during SV. THIS PROPOSAL CONTAINS THE SV OBS. OF THIS TEST. The periodicity of the alternating focus operations, and the tolerance in the performance of these operations, will vary as a function of MET according to the following schedule; this schedule indicates the exp. logsheet line number corresponding to each focus operation. SV DAY 1 wavefront measurement and adjustment: lines 26.0-26.3 SV DAY 5.9 adjustment: line 27 SV DAY 11.4 wavefront measurement and adjustment: lines 28.0-28.3 SV DAY 17.6 adjustment: line 29 SV DAY 24.8 wavefront measurement and adjustment: lines 30.0-30.3 SV DAY 33.2 adjustment: line 31 SV DAY 43.3 wavefront measurement and adjustment: lines 32.0-32.3 SV DAY 55.7 adjustment: line 33 SV DAY 71.9 wavefront measurement and adjustment: lines 34.0-34.3 SV DAY 94.4 adjustment: line 35 SV DAY 130.6 wavefront measurement and adjustment: lines 36.0-36.3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Real-time telemetry for analysis and real-time commanding for OCE and FGS configuration and mirror adjustments. The desorption focus adjstment activity is started in OV/1 (proposal 2155), continued in OV/2 (proposal TBA after launch plus 30 days) and continued in SV (this proposal). The observations of this proposal start as early in SV as possible. The Astrometry Team will supply a special GSSS catalog of candidate guide stars for Iota Carina, HR6636, HR6850, and HR6945. Astrometry header data is required to be appended to Exposure Logsheet lines 11,and 12, to enable the data obtained from this activity to be used by the Astrometry Team in the evaluation of the OV Astrometry Test AST-OV- 12. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The wavefront sensor software resident in PASS will process the Normal Mode data for each wavefront sensor observation. The results of this processing for Wavefront Sensors #1 and #3 will be evaluated by the actuator control software resident in PASS and will generate the corresponding actuator command directives to move the Secondary Mirror. The actuator command directives will be displayed for operator verification or alteration. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE REPOSITIONING THE SECONDARY MIRROR FOCUS THE TELESCOPE 0.25MM OUTSIDE OF THE NOMINAL FOCAL PLANE SO THAT DESORPTION WILL CAUSE BEST FOCUS TO DRIFT THROUGH THE NOMINAL FOCAL PLANE WITH TIME. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
