Abstract The goal of these activities is to determine the optical field angle distortions of the three FGS units to within an arbitrary scale factor, with a level of accuracy sufficient to support an overall astrometry error budget of +/- 0.002 arcseconds rms. The actual solutions will provide the Project Data Base with the significant terms, their values, and their covariances including errors, which may then be applied to general FGS observations to reduce them for field angle distortions, except scale, alignment, and color corrections. This proposal consists of five parts, one to calibrate each FGS unit, one to transfer plate scale information between ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Van Altena YALE UNIVERSITY USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. This calibration will provide the terms of the field distortions for the three FGS units to allow milliarcsecond astrometry to be performed. The observations and reductions form a set of calibrations which must be performed in order for routine astrometric observations to be reduced at the milliarcsecond level. Because the nature of the long and short spatial frequencies is predicted from pre-launch measurements, but because the final in-orbit values are not known, a sufficient number of stars with selected relative positions must be chosen to adequately cover the distortions expected yet give a sample of other spatial frequencies which may occur. The final selection will depend on these factors, and depend on the availability of stars and on the particular dates that are scheduled for the observations. The requirement of an adequate number of stars between 9th and 15th magnitudes, and consideration of sun-angle roll constraints during the SV period, has led to the choice of NGC5617 as the observation field. NGC5617 is at high declination, which makes it accessable most of the year, regardless of the HST orbital orientation. However, sun-angle roll constraints limit the availability of this target to particular times (see #5). Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Acquire guide stars in the FGS units selected for guiding. With each position and orientation of the FGS, measure from 20-35 stars (including check stars) in the astrometry FGS with the yellow filter. The exact number of stars measured will depend on the date of observation and the offset used (see below). The stars have been chosen to be well distributed about the FGS FOV. The offsets described below will move the stars about the FGS FOV, sampling the distortions at different positions. Guide stars should be changed as needed. For Part 1 and Delta-Plan, successively offset target #1 relative to the center of the FGS FOV, as described below. Here (x,y) means an offset of x arcseconds in the FGS X direction and y arcseconds in the FGS Y direction. The offsets for FGS #2 are (0,0), (60,0), (-60,0), (40,60), (40,-60), (-40,60), (-40,-60), (120,-10), (-120, -10), (240,-40), (-240,-40), (360,-60),(-360,-60), (360,-120), (-360,-120). At each of the pointings, measure the stars from the target list that fall in the FGS FOV. Some stars will leave the FOV at each new pointing and others will enter it. It is estimated that an average of 25 stars will be within the FGS FOV at each pointing. Some pointings, particularly the last 6 in the above list and especially the last 4, will have fewer than the average number of stars and can be scheduled during orbits that will have shorter observational time. The first 7 of the pointings in the list should be scheduled so that the maximum number of stars can be measured. Hughes Danbury Optical Systems, Inc. has suggested that two additional measurements be made with FGS #2 (Part 1 and Delta, Plan) as follows: With the FGS centered on target #1, (e.g., offset=(0,0)), roll the spacecraft about the center of the astrometry FGS in the amounts of +30 degrees and -30 degrees, respectively, and measure all the stars that are within the FGS FOV at these two orientations. Analysis shows that these two additional observation sets will substantially improve the accuracy of the Optical Field Angle Distortion (OFAD) algorithm, and they are essential to obtaining good distortion coefficients. This proposal is designed so that these additional measurements can be made either at nominal roll 30 days before and after the remaining observations, or at off-nominal roll during the 60-day window centered on the remaining observations. For Parts 2 and 3, a similar but shorter sequence of observations is performed using FGS units #3 and #1 as the astrometry instrument, to obtain data on these units. This is the "Super- Mini-OFAD." The offsets are (0,0), (0,60), (0,-60), (60,0), and . (-60,0). The entire sequence of observations for all 3 FGS units is given in Parts 1 (FGS 2), 2 (FGS 3) and 3 (FGS 1). Part 4 contains measurements to link the plate scales in the three FGS units. It contains no offsets and consists of lines 801-804. The priority of measurements is: FGS 2 has highest priority, FGS 3 has next-highest priority, and FGS 1 has lowest priority. The Parts 1-4 of the main proposal constitute the Minimum Plan for the OFAD. The observations on FGS #2 may be repeated later in SV as provided in the Delta Plan proposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Ground-based limits will be reached in NGC5617 at approximately the 0.01 arcsec level. Page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Off-nominal roll may be required to execute Exposure Logsheet lines 501-710. Scheduling can eliminate the use of off-nominal roll. The procedures described in #3 (Exposure Logsheet lines 501-804) are Minimum Plan. Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 are linked. They are designed so that the main part of Part 1 can be executed about Apr 15, 1991, Part 2 at about Dec 25, 1990, and Part 3 at about Dec 25, 1990. Portions of Part 4 are scheduled near both Dec 25, 1990 and Apr 15, 1991. The repeat of Part 1 is Delta Plan, and if opted for should be performed relatively late in SV. The approximate date for the Delta Plan proposal is Jun 15, 1991. The exposure logsheet lines for the Delta Plan proposal are lines 901-938. The Delta Plan and Plate Scale Transfer target lists are different from those for Parts 1- 3. Because of the critical nature of this test and the length of the observations, special measures should be taken to protect the data (eg., the data may be written to the onboard tape recorder so that they can be recovered in case of transmission errors. The observations in Part 1 and the Delta Plan must be scheduled between approximately Feb 17, 1991 and Aug 20, 1991, otherwise sun- angle roll constraints will make the required 30 degree rolls impossible. If it is necessary to schedule a full OFAD at other times of the year, a different target must be used. To reduce the effects of thermal jitter, care in selecting guide stars is essential. When FGS#2 is the astrometer, the following conditions should be satisfied: (1) The dominant guide star of each pair should be in FGS#3, and the roll star in FGS#1. (2) If possible, the dominant guide star should be chosen as close to FGS#2 as feasable (it is best if in the half of FGS#3 that is closest to FGS#2.) (3) The secondary guide star should be chosen so that the line between the two guide stars is as nearly parallel to the ST V2 axis as possible. When FGS#3 is the astrometer, the following conditions should be satisfied: (1) The dominant guide star of each pair should be in FGS#2, and the roll star in FGS#1. (2) If possible, the dominant guide star should be chosen as close to FGS#3 as feasable (it is best if in the half of FGS#2 that is closest to FGS#3.) (3) The secondary guide star should be chosen so that the line between the two guide stars is as nearly parallel to the ST V2 axis as possible. No improvement is possible when FGS#1 is the astrometer. For some pointings, there may be more stars on the list than can be measured during one orbit. The order of the stars in the target list and the arrangement of the observations on the exposure logsheet have been arranged so that a pointing can be completed in the following orbit if necessary. It is best, however, to complete the observations for one pointing in a single orbit whenever possible. Part 1 has been designed to be executed on or about Apr 15, 1991, Part 2 at about Dec 25, 1990, and Part 3 at about Dec 25, 1990. Lines 801-802 of Part 4 should be executed at about Dec 25, 1990. Lines 803-804 of Part 4 should be executed at about Apr 15, 1991. The Delta Plan proposal is designed for execution on or about Jun 15, 1991. It may be necessary to resubmit the proposals and update the target lists should significant schedule slips be encountered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. N/A Page 5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will be performed using the ADRS within the SDAS system at STScI with other reductions being performed in Austin. The data will be put into SDAS Table format for analysis using the GaussFit module. Initial values of the field distortion parameters will come from AST-OV-11. The scale value used will also come from that OV calibration. The initial model will come from the physical model of the FGS as a start, with the results of AST-OV-11 folded in for the initial guesses at the parameter values. Ground calibration of the short wavelength terms will be examined for consistency with the data. The data will be insufficient to derive a complete map of the short wavelength variations. Different polynomial and/or spline approximations will be tried to determine the most appropriate representation of the data. Sufficient data should be available to give a good solution. The covariances and residuals will be examined to determine a "best fit" solution. The terms, their values, their errors, and their covariances will be put into the Project Data Base for Standard Astrometric observations. This calibration requires the results from AST-OV-03 and AST-OV-11. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. FGS numbers refer to BAY NUMBERS. The initial calibration of NGC 188 for the OV Mini-OFAD has been done by William F. van Altena at Yale using a series of photographic plates taken during the past 50 years. He used 4-meter plates to determine modern epoch relative positions and scale. This work was funded in part by a grant from STScI for the initial scale and field distortion calibrations. The results from this procedure, which will be resident on the Calibration Data Base, will be required for virtually every HST astrometry observation made with the FGS. Perkin-Elmer will undertake these observations at the onset of OV (AST- OV-11). The derivation of the astrometric parameters from these data for the CDB will be coordinated with Perkin-Elmer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. N/A ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). GaussFit will be available in Austin and at STScI. At least one Astrometry Team representative, and usually two to three, will be available at STScI or GSFC during the tests to analyze the data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
