Scientific Justification. The purpose of this test is to verify the occultation mode on the HSP using the beamsplitter to simultaneously obtain two-color observations with the visual IDT (IDT#3) and the PMT. Additionally, the test specifically supplies the following essential verifications: 1) Determines the target acquisition ability of the HST for the occultation of a star by the dark lunar limb by using an interactive acquisition of the star prior to occultation when near the occulting limb. 2) Measures the direct and scattered light essential for planned GTO programs. 3) Check of HSP photometry and data handling in occultation mode. 4) Comparison of observed to calculated predictions using using ground-based observations of same event if available; checking the ST/HSP time relatability to UTC. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The proposed observations will use the HSP configured in HSP/PMT configuration requiring single aperture, two detector mode (IDT#3 and the PMT). The occultation candidates will be chosen from a selected set which have good predictions/previous ground-based verification. Onboard acquisition will be used for targets, and real-time contact with spacecraft will be used to instruct it to track on gyros if the lock on the guide stars is lost due to the level of scattered light. A 30 arcsec continuous scan to map the scattered light is performed along the predicted occultation track. The scan begins 5 arcsec inside the lunar limb, ending 25 arcsec away, at a rate of 0.1 arcsec/sec. Repeat the scan for a total two times. The actual occultation proceeds as follows: 1) Obtain "darks" 2) Acquire occultation candidate in finding aperture and offset to beamsplitter aperture no later than eight (8) minutes before predicted time of occultation. 3) Acquire a scan from the dark lunar limb, into the scattered light field. 4) Start continuous series of 100 microsec integrations for 12 minutes tracking on the star. Start no later than eight minutes before the predicted time of the occultation. 5) Acquire a scan from the dark lunar limb, into the scattered light field 6) Obtain "darks" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The observations are time-critical and must be uninterrupted during the time of occultation; the dark measurements must be taken sequentially to accurately reflect the background and instrumental conditions at the time of the observation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Upon placing the star in the beamsplitter aperture and beginning the integration, the observation must be uninterrupted as the exact moment of the occultation is extremely time critical. Lunar occultations will be scheduled when the HST orbital elements are determined. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data reduction and analysis consists of deriving the corrected count rates, by subtracting off the background measurement. Theoretical Fresnel patterns, calculated for finite sources with specified radii, will then be numerically fit to the observed occultation fringes to derive stellar angular diameters, the separation of multiple objects and the local lunar geometry effecting the occultation event. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. The observations are inherently time-critical and uninterruptable. It is thus anticipated that use of the onboard tape recorder may be necessary to store the data stream. Simultaneous ground-based observations are highly desirable to provide an independent verification of the occultation ephemeris predictions. Parameters describing the scans and the occultation observation cannot be determined without knowledge of the HST orbit. Scans are to be continous, 30 arcsec in length, beginning 5 arcsec inside the lunar limb, and ending 25 arcsec away along the predicted occultation path. The occultation is to start no later than 8 minutes before the predicted occultation time, and continue for 12 minutes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
