Scientific Justification. ****Test Description: In order to realize the full potential of HST for the detection of faint astronomical sources, stray light must be negligible. Extensive study and modelling resulted in the state of the art baffling system on HST. Testing the effectiveness of the system is not practical on the ground prior to launch. This test will measure the overall effectiveness of the off-axis rejection capability of bright sources at large angles while in orbit and verify the 'level-1' stray light requirement. Estimated test duration: Total exposure time= 3 hours, Total w/overhead= 5.5 hours. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Use WFC in 2x2 SUM mode as an area photometer to measure the scattered light background in several filters and at several distances from the full moon and at 50 degrees from the sun but 3 different roll orientations. 1) OFFSETS FROM THE FULL MOON: A series of exposures in combinations of filters VUV,U,V,and R filters at each of four offset pointings: 4,8,20, and 30 degrees. 2) OFFSETS FROM NEW MOON (two weeks later): at SAME POINTING as (1), repeat the 20 and 30 degree exposures for background subtraction. No background exposures are needed for the 4 and 8 degree offsets because of the brightness of the stray light. 3) OFFSET FROM THE SUN - A single pointing but at three different roll angles in each of the filters VUV,U,V,R. The pointing is to be 50 degrees from the sun and at the same time 90 degrees from the moon and 95 from the bright earth limb. WFC CCDs must be preflashed before all low light-level exposures. WPC UV flooding is required prior to the start of the test but not during any portion of the test. The quantum efficiency during this test should be worse than 90% that at the time of the flood. Purges are included for those frames with t_exp => 1000S for possible over-exposure by spurious stars. SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS: 1 - GYRO Tracking. 2 - Off nominal roll orientations required for lines 80-93. - Verification of HST off-nominal roll pointing. If off -nominal roll untested or not operational, delete only those effected portions of the test. 3 - UV FLOOD Required prior to test; WFC quantum efficiency 90% that at time of UV flood. 4 - Because of long exposures, schedule test after TEC turn-on. 5 - Exp Lines 10-40 require Full Moon (+/- 0.4 days) 6 - Exp Lines 50-60 require New Moon (+/- 1.0 days). Perform within two weeks of lines 10-40. 7 - Exp Lines 70-73 require pointing of 50 degrees from Sun, 95 deg from nearest bright earth point, and 90 deg from the moon. 8 - Order of Sequences 1 and 2 may be interchanged to accommodate lunar phase requirements. 9 - No observations during SAA passage. 10 - FGS to WFPC not required; lambda/8 acceptable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6.
