The justification for the proposed test is to determine the effect of the RIU noise on the detector dark count for two HSP detectors, IDT #3 and the PMT. The IDT #3 dark count is observed at one of the locations observed in HSP-i1. The dark count data are obtained with high voltage on and off and with RIU polling on and off. This test is considered a "delta SV" test to be run if RIU noise is observed in HSP-i1. This test also serves as a test case for the development of ground system software. The in-flight results will be compared with the data from HSP-i1 and data from ground testing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. This test is to be performed during dark time, and during the PMT portion of the test the ST should be pointing at the dark earth. 1) IDT3: the HSP is to be configured in the single-color, one aperture mode (HSP/x, SINGLE) with the detector at nominal high voltage and PAD settings. The detector is to be sampled at the central cathode position. This position has the following detector coordinates: (H,V) = (2000,1900) An integration of 5 minutes in length, sampling at 0.1 second samples, is to be obtained with detector high voltage on. Then a second sampling is done with high voltage off. The third and fourth 5 minute integrations are performed with RIU polling turned off. 2) PMT: Operating at the nominal high voltage the dark current is to be sampled for 5 minutes with high voltage on and 5 minutes with high voltage off. The RIU polling is then turned and the observations repeated. Data are to be taken in the ALL format. There are a total of eight 5 minute observations in this test. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. OV This is a repeat of an OV activity. It is assumed that initial detector turn- on and all other early OV tests have been completed. This is an internal test and no external targets are observed. Dark time is required for the entire test, and for the PMT portion of the test it is required that the ST be pointing at the dark earth. To perform the test, it is assumed that each detector has been successfully powered up for 30 minutes, which is the case if the standard stabilization times are used. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Dark time and non-SAA passage are required for this test. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data reduction is planned as follows: For both of the detectors the mean dark count rate (digital mode) will be determined and compared to the data obtained from HSP-i1. The data taken with RIU polling on will be compared to the data taken with RIU polling off to confirm that RIU noise can be completely eliminated by turning off RIU polling.
