Abstract This is a program to obtain dark counts in the SAA. The observations consist of WAVE observations before and after the SAA, and blocks of 2 minute DARKS in the SAA. We will work our way into the SAA slowly, and eventually will go through the heart of the SAA. We will examine both DARK counts due to the high radiation, as well as flouresence of the PRISM. OBSERVATION DESCRIPTION: In this test, we will obtain DARK measurements in the SAA and one SKY measurement. If the background is not too high, we may be able to revise our SAA contours to allow for more efficient use of the FOS. The standard project SAA contours assumed for this test are 10 protons/cmsq-sec with energies > 50 MeV, from Stassinopuolos. The observations will be performed as follows: Orbit with ascending node 0-22W Burst Noise Rejection Off, Element=PRISM 1) at SAA entry -10m, take a WAVE exposure 2) at SAA entry -5m, take a series of 2 minute DARKs, ending at SAA exit +5m. Center the observations on SAA passage, and have the middle exposures available for RT analysis, which will be used to determine if the next days observations will be obtained. Take parallel HSP data with the non-RT observations. 3) at SAA exit +10m, take a WAVE exposure Orbit with ascending node 22E-0 Burst Noise Rejection Off, Element=PRISM 0) at 30m before first observation, schedule a RT uplink to turn-on the high voltage, if deemed safe. 1) at SAA entry -10m, take a WAVE exposure 2) at SAA entry -5m, take a series of 2 minute DARKs, ending at SAA exit +5m. Center the observations on SAA passage, with the middle observations being available for RT analysis. Burst noise rejection should be enabled for the following lines: 18- 21, 38- 45, 58- 65, 88- 95, and 105-108 (red side) 218-221, 238-245, 258-265, 288-295, and 305-308 (blue side) It is assumed that the high voltage will not be turned off between observations in successive orbits (e.g. between lines 17 and 18). OV Prerequisites: Initial visit of proposal 2188 - Fine Y-base Measurements. SAA Orbit Definitions: EL 2-5 and 202-205 are an orbit with ascending node 0-22W. EL 12-15 and 212-215 are an orbit with ascending node 22E-0. EL 32-35 and 232-235 are an orbit with ascending node 44E-23E. EL 52-55 and 252-255 are an orbit with ascending node 66E-45E. EL 82-85 and 282-285 are an orbit with ascending node 88E -67E. EL 102 and 302 are an orbit with ascending node 110E-89E. If possible, schedule all FOS/RD observations on consecutive days; the same for FOS/BL. EL lines 11-108 and 211-308 should be scheduled with the high voltage OFF. A RT uplink for lines 11, 31, 51, 81, and 101 (for the FOS/RD) and 211, 231, 251, 281, and 301 (for the FOS/BL) will be used to turn on high voltage if previous measurements deem it safe. PCS coarse track mode may be used for EL 102 and 302. SKY-2 is an alternate targets for SKY-1, and may be freely substituted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. This test is not stray light sensitive. The WAVE observations are integral part of the test. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will be performed at the ST ScI, and the analysis will be performed using FOS IDT computer facilities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
