Currently however, there is no direct observational line_5: detection of mass loss from such stars. We propose to obtain high resolution line_6: spectra of the 2795.5 and 2802.7 Mg II (h and k ) lines for two red giants line_7: in the globular cluster NGC 6752. The profiles of these well known line_8: chromospheric lines can establish the presence of stellar mass loss from line_9: and circumstellar material around red giant stars in globular clusters. line_10: The High Resolution Spectrograph is the only instrument available that is line_11: capable of high resolution ultraviolet spectroscopy of stars as faint line_12: as globular cluster red giants. The rate of any mass loss, as well as the line_13: outflow velocity, can be derived from fitting the observed Mg II profiles line_14: will represent fundamental data necessary for understanding late stages line_15: of the evolution of low-mass stars. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: DUPREE fname: A. title: P.I. mi: K. inst: CFA country: USA ! lname: HARTMANN fname: LEE mi: W. inst: CFA country: USA ! lname: RODGERS fname: A. mi: W. inst: MT STROMLO & SIDING SPRING OBSERVATORIES country: AUSTRALIA ! lname: SMITH fname: G. mi: H. inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: KING fname: IVAN mi: R. inst: CALIFORNIA, UNIVERSITY OF, BERKELEY country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: With the HRS, we plan to acquire moderate resolution line_2: line profiles of the Mg II resonance transition at line_3: 2800 angstroms in two red giant stars in the globular line_4: cluster NGC 6752. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: DUPREE fname: A. mi: K. title: DR. category: PI inst: SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION addr_1: 60 GARDEN STREET city: CAMBRIDGE state: MA zip: 02138 country: USA ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: A31 descr_1: STAR; TYPE = K0 III; RED GIANT; descr_2: GLOBULAR CLUSTER; LATE TYPE; descr_3: POPULATION II pos_1: RA = 19H 11M 11.282S +/-0.0075S, pos_2: DEC = -59D 59' 53.89" +/-0.056", equinox: J2000 pos_epoch_yr: 1973.70 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=10.8 +/-0.2,TYPE=K0 III,E(B-V)=0.05 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: B-V = 1.69 ! targnum: 2 name_1: A59 descr_1: STAR; TYPE = K0 III; RED GIANT; descr_2: GLOBULAR CLUSTER; LATE TYPE; descr_3: POPULATION II pos_1: RA = 19H 10M 32.312S +/-0.0075S, pos_2: DEC = -59D 57' 06.25" +/-0.056", equinox: J2000 pos_epoch_yr: 1973.70 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=10.9+/-0.2,TYPE=K0 III,E(B-V)=0.05 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: B-V = 1.59 ! ! end of fixed targets !
