Originally line_2: classified as a featureless BL Lac object, weak emission lines at line_3: Z(em) = 1.72 have been detected recently. The object has a line_4: complex absorption spectrum with seven redshifts identified from line_5: our optical spectra. The source shows large line_6: (around 5 mag) optical variations, and when bright (14-16mag) can be line_7: studied at high resolution, making it a unique and important line_8: object for absorption line studies. Our proposal seeks line_9: Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) time to study the line_10: region 2200-3200A, during the next bright period. Our aim is line_11: to study absorption lines belonging to the three most complex line_12: redshift systems. We shall use the GHRS at R=27,500 for a line_13: detailed study of the Ly-alpha region z = 1.345 line_14: and the Ly-beta - O VI regions at z = 1.549 and 1.649. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: HUNSTEAD fname: RICHARD title: PROF. mi: W inst: UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY country: AUSTRALIA ! lname: PETTINI fname: MAX title: DR inst: AAO country: AUSTRALIA esa: Y ! lname: BLADES fname: J. An exposure of 8000 sec would provide a line_7: signal-to-noise of 20 and a detection limit of 25 mA near 2850 A at line_8: a resolution of 30 km/sec. We propose to obtain two sections of line_9: spectra that will cover the strong Ly-alpha line and important line_10: metal lines of the z=1.345 system. This will allow us to line_11: measure the damping wings of the Lyman line, thereby improving line_12: dramatically our HI column density for an abundance study. We line_13: shall get as a bonus, measurements of Si III 1206 and N I 1200 line_14: that will provide new information on the columns and level of line_15: ionization in the 1.345 system. line_16: In addition, we propose two further spectral regions, each line_17: centered on the Ly-beta - O VI region for the high-ionization line_18: systems at 1.549 and line_19: 1.649. Ly-beta observations will yield H I columns which otherwise line_20: are difficult to obtain because of the location of the Ly-alpha line_21: lines near 3100-3200 A. We shall be able to derive O VI line_22: column densities for the line_23: individual sub-components that make up the complex absorption. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: BLADES fname: J.
