OF ASTRONOMY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract An integrated set of multispectral images and ultraviolet spectra provides the basis for comparative analysis of the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. The spatial resolution and the spectral range of the Hubble Space Telescope, combined with the ability to continue similar observations for at least 17 years, assure that this data will contribute to a valuable database for interpreting the high resolution data from Voyager, Galileo and Cassini. The basic problems that are addressed with these data are: temporal variations of the ammonia clouds, characterization of convection in the upper tropospheres, meridional stratospheric circulation, variation in the troposphere-stratosphere dynamic coupling and seasonal variability. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. This investigation is based on the acquisition of an integrated set of observations that utilize the Planetary Camera and the Faint Object Spectrograph to accumulate a data set that will provide near simultaneous multi-color imaging and UV spectra of selected regions. The more contiguous the data, the higher will be the scientific yield. Our approach is to identify specific observing sequences and to systematically apply them during selected intervals of time. Features, including the Red Spot, and active equatorial plume, a brown barge and a White Oval, will be observed as well. The northern hemisphere of Saturn will be mapped in the second cycle and the southern hemisphere in the third cycle. We have sub- mitted a detailed schedule for the first cycle only. We plan to use a highly similar approach for th following two cycles. Because of our desire for contiguous data, we have assigned priorities to specific sets of observations and would to prefer to omit certain data when it interferes with acquisition of guide stars, etc. rather than to suffer larger temporal gaps in the data. Our planned observations are as follows: Jupiter-- Multi-color imaging with the Planetary Camera that will span orbits 1-6 (0 to 7.9 hours) and orbits 14 to 19 (19.0 to 26.9), respectively, will yield two multi-color maps of the planet. The two sequences will look at the center of the planet and the longitude of the central meridian will be 0, 57, 115, 172, 230 and 286 degrees for sequence 1 and 25, 82, 140, 197, 255 and 312 deg for seq 2, relative to the initial starting position. Sequence 1 Filters are F718M, F889N, F413M, F336W and F230W and sequence 2 filters are F413M, F718M, F631N, F336W and F284W. The indicated order of the filters minimizes the difference in viewing angle for F718M and F889N (optimizing a color-ratio map) in the first sequence and assures that we obtain the F413M pair for measuring wind field in two colors with the least smeared images. The F336W pair will be lower spatial resolution; however, they will provide information on vertical wind shear. The F631N filter places additional constraints on the spectral dependence on limb- darkening. We have considered the possible loss of the last image in some of the sequences and assumed that we could read out the last image during earth occultation. This 20.6 hour time difference between the two imaging sets corresponds to a minimum detectable velocity of 2 m/sec. During orbits preceding and between this mapping sequence spectra will be obtained of the same atmospheric region with different gratings of the Faint Object Spectro- graph: Three observing sequences have been formulated to obtain spectra ranging in wavelength from 1600 to 3300A. Using the FOS/RD and the FOS/BL configuration with gratings G190H and G270H, signal to noise ranging from 10 to 50 can be obtained for the wavelength interval from 1700 to 3300A. In order to obtain observations at selected latitudes, as well as observations of specific features, we are proposing that sequences be repeated in a systematic manner. This will allow us to characterize the Rayleigh H2 and particulate scattering, obtain visible, near IR and UV imaging, and obtain spectra of NH3, PH3, C2H2, and H2S at selected latitudes (a preliminary choice is 65, 48, 25, 20, 15, 6, and -20 degrees planetographic latitude for cycles 1 and 3, with a similar selection mapping the southern hemisphere in cycle 2). This approach to observing the planet defines the scope of data that can be obtained within 22 hours of observing time. For long-term projects, list the breakdown of exposure time requested for each cycle. (Cycle 1= first year of HST observing; Cycle 2= second year; etc.) Cycle 1 22 hours primary, 0 hours parallel Cycle 2 33.5 hours primary, 0 hours parallel Cycle 3 33.5 hours primary, 0 hours parallel Page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Imaging and spectral observations in the UV will provide information concerning the response of the stratosphere to variations in solar energy input. Unlike the IUE, the Faint Object Spectrograph, with a resolution of one arc second, will allow us to resolve the belt-zone structure and the planetary camera will yield increased sampling near the limb, providing information relating to vertical structure. Despite the Voyager, Galileo and Cassini missions, there will be a lack of coherent long-term mapping of Jupiter and Saturn. The long baseline of date that can be obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope will enhance the usefulness of the high resolution data and characterize the seasonal response of the polar regions. The nominal lifetime for HST is 17 years, less than a Saturnian year, however, coverage of both hemispheres of the two planets through this interval will generate a unique data set that will provide strong constraints on the models for seasonal atmospheric effects. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Calculations for the FOS have been carried out by L. Trafton. The exposures have been set to achieve signal-to-noise ratios from 10 to 50. The exposures for the PC have been calculated by E. Danielson and R. West. For most of the filters, the exposures are less than a minute and do not impact the scheduling of multi-filter sequences as much as the read-out times. Throughout the proposal we have indicated that we desire an update of the PC and FOS exposures to optimize the amount of data acquired while maximizing the signal-to-noise ratios. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. We have not requested any real-time observations, however in order to use a peak -up mode of acquisition on Io in an efficient manner it is necessary to sequence the data for several orbits to utilize a single guide star acquisition. We have requested an update to identify the longitude of the Red Spot and an active plume. Using ground-based observations the location of these cloud systems in System III longitude can be specified, as we did with Voyager, several months in advance. We will also need to specify the longitude of the sun-lit limb in the TORUS mode after we know whether our observations will be pre- or post- opposition. Like all other observers who are observing solar system objects, we will need information concerning the variation of the solar UV and standard instrument calibrations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The team will be organized in two categories; area of investigation and data set of primary interest. Reta Beebe and Laurence Trafton will have the chief responsibility for ascertaining that the imaging and spectral data undergoes preliminary reduction and calibration at the STScI and those components that are desired by the individual investigators are delivered for analysis. Efforts will be made to verify and archive secondary products, such as map projected data or I/F as a function of latitude, longitude, and incident and emergent angles. Other investi- gators plan to be present during the observing period to familiarize themselves with the data acquisition procedures and the preliminary data reduction. A three-day working meeting of the team will be held during the first 6 months that the investigators have the data for a given cycle. The goal of these sessions is to encourage collaboration, divide the data reduction effort and avoid duplication of effort. In addition, sub-group meetings, consisting of disciplines or geographical regions will be utilized. The investigators who are participating in this pro- posal are experienced in reduction of spacecraft data and have access to established data reduction facilities at their institutions. Costs associated with the use of these facilities are reflected in their individual budgets. Page 5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. This data is complementary to the GTO request by Westfall's group. If it is separated in time by a month or more, the two data sets will be more valuable as a dynamics pair that will allow investigation of the evolution of active storm centers in Jupiter's atmosphere. Spectroscopic observations by other GTO observers will enhance the long-term yield from this data set. It is our request for near simultaneous PC and FOS observations that make this proposal unique. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. L. Trafton, E. Danielson, and R. West are involved in other current HST proposals within this observing cycle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). New Mexico State University supports the academic year salary of the PI, Reta Beebe, as is the case for all co-investigators who are not requesting personal salaries within their budgets. Computor facilities and software for data reduction and analysis have been developed and are in position to receive this data at the individual institutions. In addition, NMSU will provide facilities and support personnel to host the annual working meetings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
