Abstract Models of the diffuse interstellar medium still lack definite observational proofs, in particular on small scale lengths (<10pc). They predict interfaces between cold dense clouds and a hot "coronal" very tenuous widely spread phase. These interfaces need to be directly obseved and studied because they offer a unique chance to understand the role of shocks, the nature of the evaporation zones, the grain destruction, the extent of the warm gas phase. All these problems can only tackled in details in the very local interstellar medium where the low column-densities of individual absorption regions are not hidden and can be well enough located. From ground-based studies, we have pointed out a new image of the nearby instellar medium. At least four velocity components are present within 20 pc. For two of them, we were able to delineate approximate frontiers toward which it is very promissing to search for interfaces. Furthermore, we found some evidence for a temperature structure within one of these components, providing therefore a prime target. Since visual observations do not offer adequate diagnostic lines and available UV data do not have the needed spectral resolution, we propose to perform with HRS a much more complete physical study of the cold and warm local gas. The selected diagnostic lines are those of AlII, FeII, MnII, MgI, and CIV, to be observed toward nearby stars in directions where confusion betwee ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. The target stars were carefully selected,owing to ground based studies. Through exposures with ECH-B at 2346A (Fe II), 2596A (Fe II, Mn II), 2852A (Mg I), 1859A (Al III) and with G160M at 1671A (Al II), and using the profile fitting method, we will find the detailed velocity structure of the line of sight, the neutrals behaviour and will have access to temperature, electron density, ionization state and depletion informations. The 1550A line (C IV) will reveal the hotter phases of the local ISM; being wider, the G160M resolution is still adequate. G160M spectra will be also completed to evaluate more precisely the scattered light levels. All the observations are made in the accumulation mode through the 0.25 arc sec science aperture, still usable for our very bright targets, to keep the resolution, with a S/N ratio of at least 100. No unusually stringent requirements are foreseen, although we need accurate heliocentric velocity scales; for this, we add wave lamp calibrations at each wavelength and at each about 20 min during long exposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The proposed programme can only be achieved by observing resonance lines of different elements in various stages of ionization, which are only available in the UV. High spectral resolution is mandatory in order to resolve the velocity structure of the lines of sight, to measure b-values of 0.5 km/s (1/10 of the spectral resolution corresponding to 500K in the case of Mg), i.e. to study individual absorbing regions. Copernicus studies were limited to O and B stars at more than 50pc. IUE does not provide the spectral resolution needed. Ground based telescopes provide the spectral resolu- tion but not adequate diagnostic lines. Nevertheless our extensive optical studies have revealed the compexity of the local ISM and the most suitable regions where to search for interfaces of diffuse interstellar clouds, and regions where the overlaps in the velocity space will be minimized. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. This study requires a survey type program. In order to minimize the number of exposures we selected only 6 ECH grating positions, distributed among the target stars according to their brightness. All fluxes are estimated from published direct UV observations or from similar scaled stars. Account has been taken for the scattered light, for the ripple function and for the decreased stellar flux in the wings of broad stellar lines when appropriate. As an example, consider the Al III line toward Beta Car. The flux at 1859A is 86E-11 erg/cm2/s/A. The new OTA + 2.0" aperture + GHRS ECH-B system sensitivity is 1.6E+11, the scattered light is 0.15 and the ripple is 0.84. This leads to a 408s exposure to reach a S/N of 100. Because we need the best possible accuracy in velocities, we will complete a spectral calibration at each setting of the HRS instrument and every about 20 min during long exposures. To reach a better evaluation of the scattered light in the echelle modes, we plan lower resolution spectra with an holographic grating. Two exposures for determining the instrumental profile are also performed. Standard procedures are used to resolve the photocathode granularity problem along with sub-stepping to improve the spectral resolution, and take care of the geomagnetic drift. Images of the aperture are also required in order to improve the wavelength scale. Because this is time consuming, we assumed that no changes should appear over successive orbits. We thus required NO GAP between observations completed on a given star. Also some observations are required to be sche- duled within 30min to link them as tightly as possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. We will make use of the Routine Science Data Processing and of the Calibration Data Base Software. We will make additional use of the Science Data Analysis System (SDAS) at the Institute, or of the MIDAS system available at our Institute. We have ready access to good computational facilities at our home institution for any further analysis. This includes, in particular, the profile fitting program initially built for analysing Copernicus data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
