Abstract The enormous gain in sensitivity and resolution of the HRS over previous instruments will at last allow us to make a detailed study of the distribution of thermally ionized N V and C IV absorption in the galactic disk. A survey of these ions in 8 carefully chosen stars ranging in distance from 80 pc to 3 kpc will provide a crucial test of the distribution of the hot gas in the interstellar medium and in particular of evaporation-front models of O VI production. The ratios of C IV and N V to O VI and Si IV will allow us to test the predicted ionization ratios, while the evolution of equivalent with and velocity spread wtih distance will allow us to measure the number of components. Comparisons with lower ionization stages will test if the hot gas producing this absorption is physically associated with cooler material. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. We will use G160M with digicon D2 and the SSA to obtain exposures at NV (1242.8 A, 1238.82 A), CIV (1550.8 A, 1548.2 A), Si IV (1393.76 A), Si IV (1402.77 A), Si III (1206.51 A), SII (1259.52 A), Si II (1260.42 A), and NI (1199.549 A). In each case we will use the standard FP-SPLIT and r=4 substepping to obtain accurate flat fielding and optimise resolution. The lines will also be placed at several positions on the digicon to allow us to cross check for slowly varying structure in the flat fielding. Regular wavelength calibrations will be obtained to allow accurate cross comparison with existing OVI data. The S/N calculations include an estimated flat fielding overhead. For the brighter stars, whose exposure times are short compared to overhead times, and hence have little impact on HST usage, we have specified longer exposure times and will attempt to maximize the S/N. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The study of hot interstellar gas via CIV, SiIV and NV requires a high resolution UV capability. The problem was attacked with Copernicus and IUE, but was not resolved because of restricted wavelength range and sensitivity in Copernicus and because of the low resolution of IUE. This problem is uniquely well suited to the HRS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Simulations show the necessity for as high a S/N as can be achieved. S/N in excess of 100 is required for the program. It requires a careful observing strategy, but is well within the capabilities of the HRS. Sample exposure calculation for the CIV line at 1549 A. This calculation assumes a star with a flux of 10(-9) erg/cm2/s at this wavelength. For CIV the most recent calibration suggests a value of 2E11 cds/erg/cm(2)/A for G160M through the SSA. Allowing a factor of 1.2 for flat fielding, S/N = 100 requires an exposure time of 60 seconds. At NV 1241, the same calculation gives an exposure of 130 seconds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Since accurate kinematic comparison between lines is an important part of the program, we will obtain wavelength calibrations to obtain velocities accurate to 5 km/s. (Instrument -- HRS, mode -- G160M) Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Extensive analysis programs have already been written by the PI and Co-Is and their students for use on existing Copernicus, IUE and optical data. These include a highly stable and automated profile- fitting program. The programs will be tailored to deal with the problems specific to the HRS. Column densities and velocity information will be extracted for all the high-ion observations. Evolution with distance and cross-correlations with OVI will be investigated, to determine the line-of-sight density of absorbing regions and their velocity spread. Velocity widths and centroids in the strong low-ionization lines will be measured and cross-correlated with the high-ionization material. Average densities will be found for each high ion species. The ratios will then be compared with various models including evaporation-front theory, time- dependent heating and cooling gases and photoionization models. Theoretical calculations have already been made for almost all cases. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests.
