Analysis of line_7: lines due to the ions C IV, NV and Si IV will give information line_8: about the velocity field of the nebula on the line of sight line_9: to the central remnant and from this on the nebular thickness, line_10: as well as on nebular ionization and perhaps on the abundances. line_11: Information about the wind expected from the accretion disk line_12: around the white dwarf component of the central binary will line_13: also be obtainable. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: FRIEDJUNG fname: MICHAEL title: DR inst: INSTITUT D'ASTROPHYSIQUE-PARIS country: FRANCE esa: Y ! lname: BIANCHINI fname: ANTONIO title: DR. inst: OSSERVATORIO ASTRONOMICO PADOVA country: ITALY esa: Y ! lname: CASSATELLA fname: ANGELO title: DR. inst: IUE OBSERVATORY VILSPA- country: SPAIN esa: Y ! lname: SELVELLI fname: PIERLUIGI title: DR. inst: CNR-OSSERVATORIO ASTRONOMICO DI TRIESTE country: ITALY esa: Y ! lname: WILLIAMS fname: ROBERT title: DR. mi: E. inst: CTIO - LA SERENA country: CHILE ! lname: GEHRZ fname: ROBERT title: DR. inst: UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA - MINNEAPOLIS country: USA ! lname: SHORE fname: STEVEN title: DR. mi: N. inst: NEW MEXICO INSTITUTE OF MINING TECHNOLOGY country: USA ! lname: STARRFIELD fname: SUMNER title: DR. mi: G. inst: ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY - TEMPE country: USA ! lname: WAGNER fname: R. title: DR. mi: M. inst: LOWELL OBSERVATORY- FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: This proposal involves HRS observations of the old nova V603 Aql line_2: in 3 spectral regions, using the G160M grating with an 0.25 arcsec line_3: aperture. The spectral regions are centered, in oredr of priority line_4: at 1541 A (corresponding to violet-shifted absorption lines of CIV), line_5: 1235 A (corresponding to absorption lines of NV) and 1391 A (lines line_6: of SiIV). The small aperture is to eliminate as many traces as line_7: possible of weak nebular emission. We aim to have signal to noise line_8: ratios in the continuum spectrum of at least 20. Estimates are line_9: based on IUE fluxes published by Krautter et al. ( Astron. line_10: Astrophys. 102, 337, 1981). ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: The proposed observations are in the UV, inaccessible from the line_2: ground. Though V603 Aql is the only old classical nova to have line_3: been observed at high resolution with IUE, the signal to noise line_4: ratio was too low to do what is now proposed. In addition, the line_5: resolution of IUE is lower. It should also be emphasized that line_6: the present type of study cannot be carried out during outbursts line_7: when novae are much brighter, as the then optically very thick line_8: absorption lines due to the expanding envelope, are partly line_9: filled in by line emission. At some stages this filling in line_10: can dominate. line_11: Some of us have been involved in the study of UV spectra with line_12: IUE of both old novae and novae during outburst. Two of us line_13: (Friedjung and Starrfield) have written reviews of UV obser- line_14: vations ("The Classical Novae", Bode and Evans eds., 1988 line_15: J. Wiley Publ. Comp.; "Exploring the Universe with the IUE line_16: Satellite", Y. Kondo ed., 1987, Reidel Publ. Comp.). Starrfield, line_17: Truran and Williams have been particularly concerned with line_18: the measurement and interpretation of element abundances line_19: in novae. Most of us have studied novae for many years. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: The exposure times were calculated using the published IUE line_2: fluxes (Krautter et al., Astron. Astrophys. 102, 337, 1981) line_3: and the HRS sensitivity Table ( number 4-9b) for grating G160M line_4: and the small 0.25 Aperture as given in the "Hubble Space line_5: Telescope Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph Instrument line_6: Book", version 2.0 May 1989. The aim was to obtain a signal line_7: to noise ratio of at least 20. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Data reduction can be performed at the ST-ECF in Garching. line_2: However, we also plan to make copies of the data since line_3: most of us have access in their own institutes to a VAX line_4: computer on which the data reduction software is available. line_5: We aim to obtain line profiles. These will be analysed and line_6: compared to obtain the velocity distribution in the line line_7: of sight and information on column densities for the nebular line_8: absorption lines. Absorption line profiles due to a possible line_9: weak continuing wind will be compared with models. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: Most of the institutes in which we work as well as line_2: national organisations will provide the necessary line_3: computing and financial facilities. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: FRIEDJUNG fname: MICHAEL title: DR. category: PI inst: INSTITUT D'ASTROPHYSIQUE addr_1: 98/BIS BOULEVARD ARAGO city: PARIS zip: 75014 country: FRANCE phone: 33-1-43201425 telex: 270070 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: V603-AQL name_2: NOVA-AQL-1918 name_3: GSC448-423 descr_1: OLD-NOVA pos_1: PLATE-ID = 050T, pos_2: RA=18H 48M 54.611S +/- 0.2", pos_3: DEC=+00D 35' 2.95" +/- 0.2" equinox: 2000 pos_epoch_bj: J pos_epoch_yr: 1984.00 comment_1: FLUX VALUES REFER TO THE CONTINUUM comment_2: AT CENTRAL WAVELENGTHS comment_3: CORRESPONDING TO THE THREE comment_4: SELECTED SPECTRAL REGIONS. fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=11.8 +/- 0.2 , E(B-V)=0.1 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-CONT(1541)= 7 +/- 1 E-13 fluxnum_3: 3 fluxval_3: F-CONT(1235)= 9 +/- 1 E-13 fluxnum_4: 4 fluxval_4: F-CONT(1391)= 8 +/- 1 E-13 ! ! end of fixed targets !
