Abstract Planetary nebulae (PN), as well as likely proto-PN, in the Magellanic Clouds (MC) will be imaged by the WFC/PC in Parallel-Mode pointings in order to obtain image diameters and surface brightness in the selected emission lines H-Beta, [OIII] 5007, H-Alpha, [NII] 6584, and the continuum. These data will support a considerably improved analysis of the physics of a sample of planetary nebula with well-known distances and a better comparison of galactic PN with their counterparts in the MC. Description of proposed observations. This program consists entirely of parallel WF/PC observations on planetary nebulae (PN) and candidate proto-PN in the Magellanic Clouds. As the RPSS system does not permit us to directly identify the primary pointings with which these observations are in parallel, we have put this information into COMMENTS for the individual exposures. In all cases, the parallel observations are possible for some roll angles. Additionally, some objects do permit the PC for certain roll angles: these opportunities are identified with text marked by >>> SPSS <<<... One of our team-members (Lasker) will always be on call to work with the SPSS team as required to identify these parallel opportunities. For the PN, the observations consist of exposures in F502N, [O III]; F487, H-beta; F656, H-alpha; and F658, [N II]. For the proto-PN, which have spectra like c-stars but with surrounding [O III] emission likely, broadband filters F555W, F702W, and F785LP, together with the F502N [O III] filter, are specified. In all cases, the exposure calculations are based on getting good nebular exposures without saturating the central stars enough to cause serious blooming; and preflashes are required because of the nebular faintness. For the proto-PN, the second, deeper F785LP exposure is set to have the central star saturated but not badly bloomed; this serves as a stronger search for halos in the red continuum. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The angular diameters are of the orders of tehths of arc-seconds to a few arc- seconds, such that the resolution of HST is necessary to observe the structure of the objects. The related ground-based programs (at CTIO and ESO) that support this proposal have been addressed in the SCIENTIFIC JUSTIFICATION. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. There are two considerations on the exposure times: 1. The total parallel time requested must fit within that allocated to the primary pointing. When this condition is a real restraint, the exposure times are reduced and/or one of the passbands is deleted. 2. The images of the bright central objects must be either unsaturated (or for the deep continuum on pn-progenitors) not sufficienly saturated to produce serious blooming. For a typical 16th mag object this is a few seconds for the broadband filters and 500-1500 seconds for the narrow band filters. Specific calculations are made in each case, with their underlying assumptions given in the COMMENTS to the LOGSHEET. Individual candidates were generated for this parallel program by comparing the preliminary HST GO Cycle 1 catalog against lists of our objects from the objective prism programs (and, in response to the referee's request that the program be broadened) to other lists of similar objects. The initial analyses, based on routinely produced data products (FITS tapes and direct photographs), will be performed by one of us (BML) at the ST ScI. The further analyses which may become necessary, depending on the number and kind of (parallel) observations that are actually implemented, will be performed by the PI (MA) at Marseille or at the ECF, depending on the software requirements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. All of the observations listed in the logsheets are real parallel opportunities, which our team has identified on the basis of the HST focal plane layout and the preliminary GO cycle 1 primary pointing list. As the Magellanic Clouds are in the continuous viewing zones, it is conceivable that a MAJOR fraction of these observations can actually be scheduled. For the PN (Targets number 1 to 9), the opportunity to sometimes use the PC (depending on the roll angle) leads to a different set of exposure times than for the WFC. In this case, a SELECT is specified: the selection is to be done by the SPSS, and depends entirely on whether the roll angle permits the PC to be used. It is emphasized that one of us (Lasker) is on call to support the SPSS planners in implementing the parallel opportunities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9.
