Description of proposed observations. This activity provides an interim measure of the FGS optical field angle distortion (OFAD), FGS-TO-FGS Alignment, and plate scale by relating angular separations as measured by the FGSs to the known angular separations of stars in a calibration field. A well known star field will be used as the calibration field. This interim, reduced accuracy calibration will be executed immediately after the OTA has achieved 3 lambda optical quality to support an RGA-TO-FGS Alignment Calibration. The HST will be pointed to a position in the calibration field, and position data for all the stars in the FOV will be obtained for an FGS. Similar collections of data will then be taken for each remaining FGS, and will be processed in PASS. A portion of the OTA calibration software resident in PASS will be used to calculate new values of distortion, FGS-TO-FGS Alignment, and plate scale. These values will be used to support the RGA-TO-FGS Alignment Calibration. Data will be obtained in FGS Coarse Track Mode. Astrometry header data is required to be appended to Exposure Logsheet lines 1 through 10 to enable the data obtained from this activity to be used by the OTA pass software. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Real-time telemetry during data takes, backed up by onboard tape recorder. Note additional requirements as specified in GF section 8. "Bootstop Phase A" (PEP ID 1539) must be successfully completed before initiation of this activity. Format FN required for data takes. A list of target stars for the astrometry activity has been provided with this proposal. A list of candidate guide stars is provided on the following page; the guide stars to be used for this activity must be selected from that list. Data reduction and analysis plans. The MINI-OFAD software resident in PASS will process the pre-alignment OTA calibration data for each FGS observation. The results of this processing is the generation of new values of distortion and plate scale for each FGS. These new values will be compared to the prelaunch values. Data from each FGS will be processed by the FGS alignment software in PASS to produce refined FGS alignment matrices for later use in the RGA-to-FGS Alignment Calibration.
