Scientific Category 3. Proposal For 4. Proposal Type 5. Continuation ID SV/FOS Sub Category ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Holland Ford ST SCI USA 301-338-4700 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract Four onboard target acquisition software capabilities will be verified in this test -- point source binary and firmware modes, peak-up mode and the occulting aperture peak-down mode. Each software test sequence will first image a star in the large aperture and then exercise the onboard software to attempt to center object. A second image will be obtained to check on the centering. This test will be repeated 2 times to check for repeatability. This program (along with the faint object target acquisition test 1314) is the highest priority SV activity to be performed. NOTE: Removed AFTER special requirements from lines 200, 210, 300, 310 due to transformation processing and propogation of timing links. Comments added to indicate timing and use of SV timeline to determine schedule. (P. Stanley - 3 Jan 90) CHANGED TARGET SELECTION IN EXPOSURE LOGSHEETS FROM LB227 TO NGC188. Description of proposed observations. For each of 4 onboard target acquisition modes, the object will be observed in the camera mode to check on the initial position, then the onboard software will attempt to center the object with a second picture obtained to see how accurately it was centered. The Binary mode will image and center in the large 4.3" aperture and an image will be obtained in a different smaller science aperture each visit (1.0, 0.3 and 1.0-PAIR). The firmware mode will image and center only in the large aperture. The Peak-up mode will first center the object in the 1.0" aperture then the 0.3" aperture. The Peak-down mode will center the object in the 2.0-BAR occulting aperture. The initial image in each TA mode sequence is taken after a position target is done to ensure that the target is not centered in the aperture after the slew to target or completion of the previous mode's verification. In the event that the previous mode fails, the HST may have been maneuvered such that the target is no longer in the 4.3" aperture. If this occurs, the rest of the modes would probably fail. To prevent this, it is requested that the initial, slew-to pointing be obtained between each mode (via FGS guide star reacquisition or equivalent). Comments have been added to the exposure logsheet where this is required. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. OV/SV PREREQUISITES: FGS/FOS Fine Alignment Phase IIIB (Prop 1444) must have been completed for both RED and BLUE detectors 7 days prior to third visit, each detector. This test to update aperture locations in PDB. SV Prop 1528 must be completed at least 7 days prior to the second visit of this proposal (lines 200- 213). SV Prop 1443 must be completed at least 7 days prior to this test. Pointing stability of 10% of the smallest aperture used (0.3") - 0.03" - is required. Targets WD2058+342 and NGC-188-136 are alternate targets. The same target should be used for all observations in this test. The ordering of the modes (BIN, FIRM, PEAKUP AND PEAKDN) are not important and therefore have been grouped within 12H. All observations are SV Minimum Plan. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. This test is not stray-light sensitive. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will be performed at the STScI, and the analysis will be performed using FOS IDT computer facilities. Since this test is strictly a verification, no pipeline calibration data will be obtained. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Data analysis, Research Assistant support, and funding will be provided under NASA'S FOS GTO contract(s). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
