Vibrations will be studied in the range 1-250 HZ. The test is designed to measure high frequency vibrations with amplitudes as small as 4 milli-arcsec and low frequency jitter with amplitudes of 1-2 milli-arcsec. A star will be placed on an HSP aperture edge and the flux will be monitored at a rate of 1000 HZ. Given an understanding of the PSF, which will be measured in this test, changes in the flux of the star on the edge may be interpreted as jitter. The jitter measurements will be repeated at each of two orthogonal edges of the aperture. In addition, a shorter measurement will be made with the star within the aperture to verify an understanding of the noise characteristics of the HSP. During the course of the HSP series, several components will be moved: HRS carrousel, tape recorder, astrometry FGS servos, and the FGS filter wheels. Because this test is scheduled for early OV, a series of banana calibrations and focal plane calibrations will be performed prior to the jitter measurements and as part of this test. Exposure-line 1: Earth-Calib TA Aperture Map Make a map of the TA aperture illuminated by an extended source to determine a course banana mode correction (possibly 1 arcsec). Analyze image in REAL TIME to determine and uplink correction. Exposure-line 2: Earth-Calib 0.4 Aperture Map In order to get a finer banana correction, make a small map with finer spatial resolution of a 0.4 arcsec aperture. Analyze in real-time and uplink banana correction. Exposure- line 3: Earth-Calib Horizontal Edge Scan In order to determine the edges in deflection coordinates to an an even finer accuracy(<0.044"), make a 1 line map in the horizontal deflection direction. Analyze in real time to find best edge location. **The edge coordinates for the read beam determined here must be used in Exp_lines 12 and 212 for accurate read beam placement on edge.** Area scan characteristics: Begin at deflection (H=H0+91 steps),(V=V0). X-SIZE=45, Y-SIZE=1, STEP-SIZE=0.044". V0 and H0 are the banana-corrected center of TA aperture. THE CORRESPONDING X AND Y IN ARCSEC (PROP INSTRUCT FRAME) ARE X=2.83" and Y=-2.83". Exp time per 45 points=1.125 sec. Exposure-line 3 continued: RT ANALYSIS FOR lines 10-50: Determine horizontal deflection coordinates for edge from 50% level of flux versus defl step. This X value will be used to set the banana mode deflections for subsequent exposure lines. The analysis can be done during slew in exp line 10. Exposure-line 4: Earth-Calib Vertical Edge Scan Same as 3 for the vertical edge. **The edge coordinates for the read beam determined here must be used in Exp_lines 42 and 242 for accurate read beam placement on edge.** Area scan characteristics: Begin at deflection (H=H0 steps),(V=V0+91). X-SIZE=1, Y- size=45, STEP-SIZE=0.044". H0 and V0 are the banana-corrected center of TA aperture. THE CORRESPONDING X AND Y IN ARCSEC (PROP INSTRUCT FRAME) ARE X=2.83" and Y=2.83". Exp time per 45 pts=1.125 sec. RT ANALYSIS FOR lines 10-50: edge from 50% level of flux. Exposure-line 10(and 210): MODE I into 10" Aperture Acquisition of star for step/dwell and jitter measurement. The database V2V3 position of aperture center may be in error. This Mode I is necessary to bring the star to the data base center of the aperture and **if necessary** make a smmall offset correction to place it on the detector coordinate center determined in lines 3-4. The tolerance is reflected in the size of the spatial scan (1 arcsec). If the V2V3 is off by more than 0.3 arcsec, then the small offset correction must be made. Exposure-line 12(and 212): STEP/DWELL over Horizontal Edge Step/Dwell needed to determine V2V3 edge coordinates and star PSF. POS TARG 3.54, -3.54 (+3.18,-3.18) but with length offset = 0.5 arcsec to start scan (4.5 arcsec from center in Horiz direction - please UPDATE with accurate coord transformation coeff). This exp line is necessary to determine edge to an accuracy of <0.05 arcsec in RT. Perform DF224 Step and Dwell manuever to step the star across the 10 arcsec aperture edge. SCAN LENGTH: 1.0 arcsec, STEP SIZE: 0.05 arcsec, SUGGESTED TIMING: dwell-2 seconds, HSP sample+readout=1 sec, slew=10seconds. RT ANALYSIS FOR line 20: On-line determination of V2V3 edge - determine the step in the series where the flux is 50 percent peak in the function, flux versus offset. Exposure-line 20(and 220): Jitter on Horizontal Axis 1100 second HSP exposure with parallel mechanism motions. Exposure-line 22(and 222): SEQ S/C-P1 and S/C-P2: Exp-line-300(and 310): S/C Dark - Insert delay before HRS carrousel motion 600 seconds. Begin sequence to bring up HRS but time such that carrousel motor turn-on does NOT occur BEFORE 600 sec (tolerance 20 sec) into the HSP measurement. The VIS-IDT aperture plate has been previously measured using the bright earth and checked against ground spec on aperture centers. 2. The banana mode has been sufficiently characterized such that it may be predicted to better than 0.5 arcsec and that the HSP has been stabilized at the star position so that the positions will remain constant through the test. 3. Intermediate FGS/FGS and Phase II HSP/FGS Alignments completed and the DF224 STEP/DWELL capability (STScI OLT) has been tested. 4. On-board banana correction procedures have been tested. 5. Commands needed to rotate HRS carrousel, tape recorder, and FGS have been tested and verified in-flight. 6. Data NOT to be taken during SAA passage. 7. TEST IS NOT TO BE POSTPONED IF FGS ASTROMETRY MODES ARE NOT OPERATIONAL. REMOVE THOSE PARALLEL SEQUENCES. 8. Exposure Lines 20 and 50: Tape recorder motion, other than the schedule given in Question 3, also must not occur. 9. Real Time Analysis for Banana Mode deflection and target location required. 10. REPETITIONS: Repeat test during SV (SV DELTA PLAN). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. 1. Defining aperture edges and centers must be performed in sequence and directly preceeding jitter measurements because of the changing nature of the focal plane and HSP relay optics. 2. The jitter measurements must be un- interrupted due to the technical goals of the test described in Questions 2 and 3. 3. A repetition of the test during SV is requested in order in order to assess the pointing stability after the focal plane has settled and the full alignment calirbrations have been performed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.
